Work in Progress/Tests / Balcony
« on: 2014-08-11, 20:35:06 »
Just did a quick test on a client's scene (not modeled by me). I converted the materials (some by hand) and lit it using an HDRI.
C&C are welcome.

This is my first "real" try on Corona Render, no converted materials nor anything. Done today, from scratch, all modeling in 3ds max (and the bronze material is based on a bronze I found on the great www.coronamaterials.com).
My main goal was to get a grip on Corona Materials and see if I could do what I normally do in VRay.
Render times were really fast, with the final image taking around 10 minutes in ~2000x3000 on my i7. Pretty neat, I think.
As usual, crits&comments are more than welcome!

Gallery / Friday fun
« on: 2014-04-07, 02:25:27 »
Had some spare time last friday and put together a small scene to test both V-Ray 3.0 and Corona.
The scene is no biggy, but I wanted to try a few things. For instance, I wanted to test the Material Converter with a couple donzen different materials. Found some discrepancies, some weirdness with anisotropy, but all fixable. The other thing I noticed was a small problem with the displacement: Corona seemed to simply ignore the mapping already applied to the object, which was kind of weird. On the bright side, I thought "what the heck" and replaced the displacement on the rug with real fur turned into geometry (21 million polys). Corona passed thru it like a breeze. So sweet!
Also did a few captures on different moments just to compare how noisy the pic is as time passes and found the scene to be completely noise-free after around 40 minutes (which is lightning fast compared to V-Ray, which took 2:30hrs to finish the same image).
Another thing: the same scene rendered MUCH slower when I had AO included as a render element. Anyone confirm that?

1 hour rendering, just to see how long it would take to get rid of noise from DOF... All settings default. ;-)

Gallery / Quick, quick test

Put together in 5 minutes to see how it copes with millions of faces (the furry thing) and HDRI.
20 passes, 40 minutes for the far one and half the time for the detail.

Work in Progress/Tests / Old kitchen redone
« on: 2013-09-22, 05:57:12 »
This is another old scene of mine. Once again, I wanted to test Corona against V-Ray.
My V-Ray times, at the same resolution, were 40 min per frame (it's an animation). So, I left this cooking for around 40 minutes to see how well Corona would stand against V-Ray.
There's still noticeable noise and the grout on the floor tiles seems weird at some points (because of the bump map, maybe?).
Another thing worth mentioning: the scene was looking good after 40 seconds, but is taking a long time to clean.

Gallery / First test ever
« on: 2013-09-20, 16:36:47 »
Did this last night, using a scene from my archviz course.
The scene is originally intended for V-Ray, and I converted all materials to Corona using the scripted converter (which works great, btw). Did not mess too much with the settings, just a sun and sky.
First things I noticed about Corona (and really liked):
- proxy system is great, specially the point cloud display
- Corona_Scatter, where have you been all my life?
- Fast, fast, fast (this render cleared up in about 10 minutes)
- Being a V-Ray guy, I miss the physical camera workflow... :-(
- Still getting used to the outcome, which I found to be a little more washed out than usual (using LWF, of course).
Anyway, after my first couple hours with Corona I'm really liking it and looking forward to the next updates.
Great, great job, Ondra!
