I know of the 'Wireframe in Viewport' function which is good. But for more my personal taste I would like to have an option to have this on a 'backface cull' basis.
Sounds complicated but the only meaning is: Lights are shaded in the viewport when they are facing camera/perspective. When not- for example you're using a large soft, fill light more or less in camera axis-they are displayed in wireframe mode(or transparent). In this way the camera viewport isn't blocked by the light.
What do you think?

I was asking for CoronaLights backface culling some time ago, but was given wireframe instead :] Which is good enough for me.
There is one trick however that may suit your needs or maybe not. Move all your lights into separate layer and set backface cull>on in properties of that layer. Now set display properties> by layer in properties of lights and voila - you have backface culling on your lights!

Excellent! thank you.
