Title: Testing Corona Scatter and VolumeMTL
Post by: JonG on 2015-06-25, 17:06:27
Recently started doing 3D work and with the help of corona renderer and these forums I ran some tests. Please point out the obvious mistakes because i've become addicted to corona and 3D art in general and would like to improve. Still trying to figure out God Rays so I put those in Photoshop.

Trees: Laubwerk Trial trees.
Followed Adanmq's amazing leaves material guide.
Used 3DS Max 14 passes at 600 DPI 11x17.

Nice image. If you need godrays, see this basic guide on scattering effects:

And here is my sample scene which you could find useful:

Thanks for the links Maru, i'll do some testing when I get the chance. I think the problem is the sun not showing up during renders. I'm still a beginner with settings but I noticed that the sky and sun fully render in other people's work. This is what i get with the raw render.

the sun is not showing because of the exposure. Also best option to get godrays is to use single scatter only mode ;) In general, you need really strong light source with really dim ambient light source (sky) and also have the sunlight either coming through very small light opening, or at least shining sharply against the camera :)

I don't think it's the brightness. It's a PNG file and the background comes out empty so it's just the white from this page xD. Thanks for the info about the lighting though. I've only started doing 3d stuff about 2-3 months so all these secrets are quite helpful.

I've quickly threw together some dummy scene similar to yours and set up fog and lighting producing good godrays. Here's an image:

And i am also attaching the scene. You can use this lighting and fog settings in your scene and see if it works. You will have to adjust fog absorbtion distance though, to match your scene scale (mine is not realistic).

That's a thing of beauty Rawalanche!

@Maru and @Rawalanche.

I loaded up both of your testing scenes and get nothing but a black screen on render. Is there something I could be doing wrong? I'm a huge beginner so most settings are a foreign thing to me lol.

Edit- I am using the alpha v6 version of Corona btw. Not sure if that's the problem i'm experiencing with these scenes.

That explains a lot :) Corona AV6 does not support a lot of features, including volume fog ;)

So did I get extremely lucky with the volumetric fog on the forest scene? I had to mess with the volumeMTL's emission to get it to look like fog.

VolumeMTL in A6 doesn't do any scattering as far as i remember. It's just constant color. Similar to adding fog in post with depth pass :)

New quick test with Corona scatter. Still really noisy but i'm liking the feel.

Thanks for mentioning it's A6. ;) I hope you know that you can get a fully functional 45-day demo of the newest version of Corona right here:

This one is more of a grass test using corona scatter and some simple materials. I also cleaned some trees to work on corona and dropped them in to see how they render.

Followed Adanmq's amazing leaves material guide.

Hmm i've used the search, but cant find the Guide you're referring to.
could you please post a link? I'm desperate to get some fresh views about foilage materials.

Here is the link to his thread. I would read all of it because everything is very helpful.

I'm also attaching his setup below in case you missed it.

The tree shader indeed comes out very nicely. Did you model/texture the trees yourself or you bought them online? If so, did you do any tweaking on the materials?

EDIT: Nevermind, didn't see there was a page 2 -_-
