Title: Bump (bitmap filtering) + glossiness = problem :P
Post by: tiagodmed on 2013-04-12, 23:33:34
I was testing rendering fabrics and came across the following problem ...
I adjusted the fabric material of my testing in a "frame" (close up frame... :P I do not know if this is the correct term, in Portuguese would be "enquadramento"). I adjusted the scale of the texture, bump intensity, glossiness ... And for that "frame" the yield was good.
But when I put the scene late in the "frame", which is further away, the yield had problems (I'd better show than describe, my English is not very good).

Can you upload me the scene with the problematic camera (http://corona-renderer.com/upload/)? I suspect this was already fixed in the daily builds

I also have problem with bump filtering with the latest legacy daily build, i tried all the  modes even the No flitering blur is making my bump incorrect, i really hope it will be fixed soon...

I was cleaning the file to send and I open the material on the slate, only then realized that the bump texture was different from other (blur filter 0.01 and the others 0,5). I'll send this file anyway. But I will also send a corrected, now I did tests with variations in the blur filter (1 - 0,5 - 0,1 - 0,01).
In the background material appearing a strange effect, some "marked" areas.

Yes, I also encountered the same problem.
Now bump normally works only with parameters: blur = 1, the amount of bump no more than 1, sorrowfully (((

Yes i have the same weird effect, i've turned off bump for a wood floor because of  in a project...

I tested more and found that even with the bump parameters blur = 1 amount = 1 does not always work correctly!

Hope to see it fixed soon

This problem can be solved. Need to adjust the amount of bumps together with the blurring, ie less blur, the less the amount of the bump.
At least I got it. Try it.

i've already tried it but i see some weird spots
i will post a scene test that i've done a very simple one.

Maybe because it is not correct to use a simple color like environment. I just put in the env.slot HDRI image. :)

yes but it stills a bug without hdri, did you try coronasky with sun ?

Is it incorrect to put coronasky in env? here is the same bug

Yes, it's very strange, is irreparable bug ((

I'll fix it eventually. Just not now, I am pretty sick :/

Is it ok to use VrayHDRI in env slot? :D

Hey, I'm trying to reproduce this bug but it doesn't appear for me. Tried with solid gray env and CoronaSky and nothing wrong happens...
I'm using alpha4, max2012.

really weird, what daily build do you use?

the public release has no issues with bump and blur filtering, try the latest daily one from dropbox.

I went over the scene. The problems are:
- You use way too much bump
- your bump map is practically a 1D texture, with only horizontal lines. Such texture will turn your material reflections to anisotropic ones. The hard line you see on the floor is actually an anisotropic reflection of the teapot base. This is further highlighted by the fact that corona requires all reflection rays to be above the surface - so there are many rays at the grazing angle, resulting in the sharp reflection of the geometry part which is barely touching the floor. You need to use a bump map with some variation also in the other axis, the problem then disappears

With little bump value it is just become less visible but not disappear. Even with using square parametric tiles.

Post by: Ondra on 2013-06-12, 22:05:44
can you post the square parametric tiles scene?
Title: Re: Bump (bitmap filtering) + glossiness = problem :P

in attachment.
but i think it is not 'major' status problem

and some pictures for example. It's not reference but maybe so will be better to understand what i mean

looks like works some cutoff in the shadow of teapot and shadows didn't affect on light reflections at the edges of tiles

For such cases I`m using displacement

And did someone tried to use normal maps instead of bump?
Title: Re: Bump (bitmap filtering) + glossiness = problem :P
Post by: Ondra on 2013-08-14, 16:04:11
normal mapping should give you the same problems as bump mapping, because it is also fake. Only displacement is correct
