You can use Max's native hair and fur modifier in geometry mode. It has some limitations but should be sufficient in most cases. You can also model separate hair or hair clumps and use Corona Scatter object. Or you can use a proper displacement map depending on what kind of carpet you want. :)

Corona is a mean to render your carpet.

Here you can find a tutorial do model a carpet using what maru mentioned:

For the CScatter create a small scene and test the settings. You can see in the viewport the settings in action.

The only thing missing in Corona Scatter is controlling the object's position using a grey scale map.

So just to be clear, when you guys are talking about "Geometry mode" you are talking about converting the hair into mesh right? which creates ridiculous objects and insane amount of polygons in most cases if you have any type of detail :/

I hope I'm wrong, but I can't seem to find a way to render max fur/hair in corona without converting it?

No. In effects window in Max (8 key) go to hair and fur and change mode to geometry. It may look slightly different because I don't have Max started right now but I believe you'll find it. It converts hair to geometry only at render time.

Aaaahhhhh see I thought I remembered this being possible, but to be honest I haven't needed to use max hair/fur for the better of 7-8 years so it totally left my memory.

Thank you - great help!
