Title: mesh panel not looking like what i had expected
Post by: tom182 on 2025-07-01, 00:37:38
Hi,
maybe this is normal but i would have thought it would not be so tansparent looking,

I started off using opacity maps for vertical metal mest panels on a building roof. did a few test renders and the panel looks just looks like a solid panel with visibilty set to like 0.4, than a panel with holes,
so i decided to use a model of the panel (physical holes ) and see if that worked better, pretty much same result
idea is that the panels hide equipment but they won't be hiding much looking like this :-(

could this be a rendering setting. pretty much using default,
any advice appreciated

Hi,

I think you are doing everything fine, this is just how it looks, at least from that point and with that lighting.

I would check the materials, just to make sure that the opaque parts do not have any transparency coming from opacity settings.

I think it's a matter of getting hole sizes right. Of course 3D having holes made with geometry instead of simple opacity on a flat plane also adds quite a lot. Corona pattern here is the perfect tool for the job.

Hey big thanks for that, if could well be that alright (hole pattern/size) ,
I'll drop them into scene and see if it looks better than what i was getting but that definitely the look im trying to get, :-)

unfortunately i am using 2022 for this project (corona 11 hotfix 2)

Installed corona 11 on max 2025 but the panel file crashes when opening

could you save it out as a max22 version please?

No problem. Attaching scene saved as Max 2021. I also deleted all Corona bits, except the pattern modifier and changed the renderer to scanline, so it shouldn't crash when opening in older versions.

Oh, so it's Max's issue, not Corona's. I collapsed the stack in this file, so hopefully it will load fine for you this time, but the pattern itself will no longer be easily modifiable.

This one worked, never used Corona pattern before so this is great,
Thanks for help on this

Here you go, now when you discovered new tool, you will be asking yourself how i could ever live without it? You're welcome! :]

Yeah, this depends on the scale/distance from camera/resolution. If you look at a semi-transparent curtain, you also see what is behind it, even though it is a material with lots of tiny holes in it. :)

Weird how it looks like large holes in the screen panels (at back) when i make it an elcosed cage , tried flipping normals on the 2 new polys- didnt affect it, :-/

box on right is just original box with edit poly turned off

The "shape" of the moire pattern depends on things like angle and distance from one surface to another. But it is moire.

Image filter is how you control the look in this case.
try softer/larger filter.
