Only interesting improvements with plugins outside of Corona.
No one is going to use Corona Toons, and the Firefly fix should have been a fix in some update because it's a bug.

No one is going to use Corona Toons,
That's a bold claim. Did you do large scale survey before come to this conclusion? People has been asking for outline and NPR rendering in Corona for years. I think someone will be using and be pretty happy about the new features.
and the Firefly fix should have been a fix in some update because it's a bug.
In that spirit you could call rendering one giant bug, because it slowly resolves from almost pure noise to clean image. It should give you perfect image instantly, otherwise it's a bug :]
There will always be someone who are not happy with any new feature in the release, because they are not useful to him, but remember that there are people who waited those features for years and they can't wait to start using them. Maybe next version will be full of features that are useful to you? ;]

For me the toon thing is like chasing a trend. But now being part of Chaos Group, it seems much like Autodesk, by the time you get around to making it happen it's outdated. I am fine if people need it, but I have never had a client ask for a toon outline an any project for years now. And unless it is super feature rich, that has all kinds of cool stuff like the link below, then it falls flat and will only go so far. I think the you guys are putting out features that just underbaked and it overall brings down the value of corona for me. See scatter, material library, New Frame Buffer...

All I want is normal production-ready crypto mattes in 2025. I have been waiting for them since 2018.

Can you explain in what way they are not production ready? They are just industry standard cryptomattes already. Now, it seems that Nuke (I think it was - one of the video editors anyway) uses some additional (not part of the actual cryptomatte) metadata and without that metadata, Nuke doesn't process it the way it would process things otherwise. Is this what you mean? Let us know so we can take a look into it :) But right now the cryptomatte from V-Ray and from Corona works the same in, e.g. Photoshop or Resolve.
PS or is it that it has to be saved to CXR, which then need renaming to EXR and the renaming step is what causes problems?

The Toon thing has, of course, its justification.
As an Arch VIZ renderer, you will often need this for lower-level than real renders.
In the conceptual phase for establishing the design / construction ideas, Arch competitions ( where no full-blown renders are allowed), etc.
It’s more a matter of how it is implemented.
A separate pass would be of great help also!
-
Agreed! Disappointed. Wish chaos never took over Corona .

Yes, Cryptomatte is impossible to use now in animation production due to CXR filesize and lack of control what info CXR format carries.
I think this is already covered on ideas portal though.

Most other render engines have had this figured out since 2016. I am still not sure why Corona has not had this sorted at this point, as it is a must for any commercial render engine. I mean, Blender and Unreal even have it.
-
Just a note, we've explained why it isn't sorted (being able to save directly to EXR) - it's because we use the native Max and C4D save routines, and they limit what data you can add to the EXR. So we use CXR instead, as we wrote that save routine and can easily adjust what it contains and how its formatted. The solution would be to rewrite ALL save routines to be done from Corona and not via the DCC, which is a very large task and would take a significant amount of development time, making it hard to fit into the dev process (as we'd have to give up on developing other things to do it). It's definitely on the to-do list though.

food for thought:
Corona for 3dsMax
data from https://chaoscorona.ideas.aha.io/ideas
most popular with 99 votes - UI update to Qt - fair enough, all good here.
second most popular with 65 votes: "Moon & Stars addition for Corona Sun & Sky" - sorry, what?
43 votes: "Aspect ratio / image resolution per Camera" - wait.. few ways of doing that in 3dsMax plus countless scripts and plugins, is it really needed?
only 6 votes: first (most popular) "'idea" mentioning issues with CXR format. big deal for everybody rendering animations I would assume.
only 4 votes: texture baking. actual workflow breaking incomplete feature.
a question arises - is developement led by "users' needs" getting Corona in the right direction?

Democracy sucks sometimes..

I genuinely thought that moon and stars request was a prank... until i saw that it's planned.

The Night Sky has already been developed by the Innovation Lab, and will be out in V-Ray 7.2 very soon. Seeing that in a demo for what's upcoming in V-Ray is probably behind people voting for it in Corona, they saw it, liked it, and voted for it :) The other plus is the actual code to do it all has already been developed, meaning from our side we have to look at how to integrate it and don't need to spend time doing the more complicated and time consuming part of working out HOW to calculate it.
There's also always more going on than in the road maps, which we keep to things we're fairly sure of - for instance, I just did some digging into the size of CXR files and have made some suggestions, but there's no development date for that yet (or even a finalization of what can be done), so you won't see it on the Trello. Doesn't mean stuff isn't happening though - despite the low number of votes on the Ideas Portal :)
