Title: Panel tool?
Post by: aaouviz on 2025-06-03, 08:52:36
Sorry for the vague description, but I swear that I recently saw a cool (built-in?) tool for 3dsmax - maybe it was a plugin?

Essentially you can select a mesh/poly object and apply it to another polyface. I don't think it was 'conform' modifier, per se, but more simplistic.

So, it might make modelling a tower with lots of repetitive window frames easier. You model the basic form and then apply the windows to the selected faces.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? Going mad trying to find it.

Thanks

maybe you are refering to kitbasher from Joker Martini?

Thanks for the reply Leo.

I love JokerMartini! I haven't seen this kitbasher though!

Yes, what I described is quite similar to this but much much more basic. I fear this is a bit feature heavy for my simple specific needs.

Might have to buy this anyway though.

Thanks again.

Still hunting for the original tool/modifier/plug-in I saw, though, if anyone has any leads?

Are you sure it's not the conform modifier?

There is also a conform compound object - https://help.autodesk.com/view/3DSMAX/2025/ENU/?guid=GUID-5790F099-E538-4702-9831-EC06C0EA2819

And shape merge compound object - https://help.autodesk.com/view/3DSMAX/2024/ENU/?guid=GUID-50D6A2B6-D4D8-4BE7-A416-CE80AFFEEA7F

There were several other doing the same, this one seems to be free.

Also thought of this one. Basically the task can also done with Corona pattern, it does exactly this and is quick also in the viewport ;)

But I hate that I don't get hard edges from Corona pattern compared to other solutions (here: yes, Populate:Panels). And for cloning window frames I would rather look into railclone (light).

Good Luck

Just realized you could have meant this one here, featured recently over at cgpress:

I appreciate all the replies, thanks.

And some really cool tools here, so I hope these come in handy for me and others in the future.

However, no, still not what I'm looking for. It was much simpler, even without a UI, I think - probably a modifier.

Take an object, select some faces and click a button to have them replaced by an object. No idea how 'smart' or adaptive the process was, but it seemed straight forward and good for simple application.

I'll keep hunting. Thanks again,
