Same for me, with Max 2013 x64, if I choose path tracing as first solver and HDcache as secondary solver, Max crash.
update : path tracing in first and secondary solver or path tracing without secondary solver crash too.

You should be aware that very recent builds will be broken and unstable. It usually takes about a week after rewrite to get everything back in order. Rewrites pay a lot afterwards. This one should bring a lot more flexibility (fakes) without performance loss and support of participating media (volumetrics).
