I have not used Vantage and I am unsure why it's such a big deal ?
Can anyone give me links to animations that are using it that have been exported from Corona ? Why would I want to pay an additional $1000 AUD to use it when I am already paying for Corona. Also does Vray not already have GPU rendering implemented ?
I am guessing its fast, but is it up to scratch in terms of quality compared to corona and vray. And why is it not its own renderer, why does it need to be exported out of max/c4d from existing render engines ?
Seems like a big spend to use it including the additional cost of getting high-end GPU's to get the most out of it.
Any expert opinion's on this would be great.

Check out the virtual tours by The Boundary (https://www.the-boundary.com/virtual-tours).
I guess the target base is real-time, web-site integration, fast turnaround times for animation, etc. Offline rendering for Corona/Vray has its place, commercial high quality photo-realistic images. Real-time also has its place - for other platforms such as I mentioned above. Depends on your client base I suppose, what tools you need to deliver those projects.
-
The Boundary tour looks like Unreal not Vantage ? Can you out put a real-time app with Vantage and program in functionality ?
I understand game engines and how they can be applied for archviz etc. My question was about Vantage.

I dont think its Unreal, theres quite a few solutions around for virtual tours.

Not that I know of.
I assume the main reason for vantage at this point is working in real-time for animations and with on-site clients. Things like The Boundarys "Cinemagraphs" (slow pan-dolly gifs, wind blowing curtains etc). To your point sure you could use Vray GPU or Corona for this but if you have already done the work in 3dsmax and just want to see your animation in real-time then that would be pretty handy if you do lots of those things.
There is also a couple of case studies (https://www.chaos.com/vantage#case-studies) on the vantage site you can read about how those companies use it.
-
The Boundary bought Buildmedia NZ and their weapon of choice is Unreal.
But it's probably a mix of both.
-
i honestly dont understand any development towards Vantage.
If anyone want to use this technology - you have to buy vantage, so just use vray?
All of this developers' efforts so somebody can still use "familiar" corona process just to dump it into vantage? I would rather dump it into Unreal....
-
Getting something working in Unreal is quite the task, whereas getting it running in Vantage is pretty straightforward, a lot of things convert across very well indeed. This will be even more true when animation from the DCC is supported (that would be even harder to transfer across to Unreal). The fact that The Boundary bought a whole new specialist team who use Unreal, rather than adapt to it with their existing staff, perhaps shows some of the complexities of trying to work with Unreal as a solution - which is no surprise that it's complicated, as it's a game engine and is not intended to cater to archviz.
So the concept is that Vantage provides GPU rendering for those that want it, in a way that doesn't require complex conversion and doesn't require learning a complex tool designed for another market entirely, since many have been asking for years for "GPU Corona". You can use V-Ray GPU as you say, but Vantage has some benefits over that (you'd need to check V-Ray and Vantage information to get the comparison there). And V-Ray is also a separate purchase.
There should also be more benefits from Vantage in the future, which arise from the fact it doesn't take place inside a DCC but is standalone :)

I really appreciate the work of the corona team,
I have been using this engine since version 6 alpha, and being able to NOT use that awful vray back then was a game changer.
But there is no denying that in the opinion of many users (and mine), in the last few years have been developed features that, for example, duplicate Forest Pack....next step is intergration with Vray GPU?
In my opinion, if someone changes the workflow to GPU, they will abandon Corona within a month due to the terrible work performance in 3dsmax.
Give us, i dont know, chromatic abberation in VFB?
10% faster material editor?
GPU Enchanced something like auto texture tiling?
Regards!

There are no plans to integrate with V-Ray GPU (if that made any sense, it would have been done a long time ago to resolve the GPU requests which have been going on for years). Vantage will be the sole GPU solution for Corona users. Also people don't want to move away from CPU to GPU, they want the option to use one or the other depending on what is the best match for a particular project, or a particular stage of a project - the way we see it, Vantage will be to get quicker drafts and tests, then for the full quality, Corona will be what people use. Otherwise if GPU was good enough for all their uses, then people wouldn't even be using Corona in the first place.
Hope this helps!

I don't understand the cost $1000 AUD for vantage, if I really wanted GPU rendering Vray would be my choice since I would not need to spend additional money to have CPU and GPU rendering. Also other easy to use real-time rendering packages such as D5 are way cheaper.
-
D5 doesn't have the advantage of choice between GPU and CPU of course, it's GPU (and AI) so it's not so easy to use, say, GPU for drafts as things progress, then CPU for final renders where that ultimate in quality is required. Rather like Unreal, you'd pretty much be creating and maintaining two different copies of a scene to some extent.
As to the pricing of Vantage, this not something we are involved in setting of course. You can give your feedback through a ticket at https://support.chaos.com/requests/new as that can then be forwarded to those who do set pricing for their consideration.

Is there any way we can get vantage trials reset? As the corona link improves it would be good to be able to try it and see if it better integrates with our workflows.
-
Interesting question, not sure on the answer to that, but I will ask.
-
Any news on trial reset :) ?
-
We'll probably see that for Corona 13 in June, perhaps earlier; it certainly won't be for Corona 12 Update 2 as it doesn't bring any significant changes for the Vantage export or live link, and in fact being a technical release, there won't be a trial reset for Corona itself either for this one.

Any expert opinion's on this would be great.
I had a very brief play with it. Trial for vantage is too short to provide any useful opinions.
To date, i have looked into vantage ($80), D5 ($30), and i'll start looking into UE ($0)
D5 is very easy to use. Most corona textures and lights come through without too many issues.
Vantage was very similar to D5. But if they can iron out the live link bugs, and create a seamless/stable connection with Corona- it would be very appealing.
UE has a steep learning curve, which is why i haven't committed to it -- but it's free
None of the above really compare with Corona (ie:from a render quality point of view) but i'm sure the gap will continue to clase.,
At this stage if you are looking at it from an animation/interactive experience, then it has a lot of merit.
My biggest gripe with it, (as you suggest) is the price to run it in conjunction with corona.
Based on the pricing structure, (unless you have deep pockets) you really need to decide: Corona or Vantage - but not both.
I do hope Chaos try to impliment a lite version of Vantage as an 'add-on' for corona and vray users. Sure, create full version suite for people who want to skip the corona/vray process... but for those of us who prioritise quality for static imagery, it would be nice to be able to switch to a Vantage render engine for the purposes of creating animations.
Based on my limited knowledge of UE, you can switch between Raytrace and Nanite for render process. Raytrace i 'think is better quality' but nanite lets your work with obscenely complex files.
Rather than buying additional software for the privillage, you simply switch between the two. Oh wait... its free, so the benefit of having an addon is irrelevant.

This is precisely why ive not really committed to vantage too. Yeah it looks useful but asking for the price it is without having full support for all of the maps of the two render engines it is effectively built for, makes using it a pretty annoying process. Not supporting triplanar maps is such a huge issue for me personally.
It adds a whole extra process to a project if i need both renders AND realtime/animation/video outputs.
Until it just works and i dont have to mess around in vantage trying to get it to look the same, i wont be paying the ridiculous price tag.
I agree that there needs to be bundling deals for chaos users. Right now we are paying for corona and enscape and adding vantage on top of this is just getting ridiculous price-wise.
We are actively looking for a realtime solution at work so this isnt coming from a passive place. I want vantage to work as it should but i cannot abide by the pricetag until it does and even then its steep.
