I have been watching some tutorials online where they are using max and when they plug a map into the roughness they are able to adjust the roughness value like say 60% and add a map that they can change the percentage of how much it's used to mix both.
We can do this for the base color where we got the mix strenght slider but thats the only place we can do this in c4d. I know i could replicate it by using a layer shader and instead of a roughness value use a greyscale color and then we can lower the opacity of the map we use but this feels less natural. Is there any other way we can do this in c4d or are we just missing the future?

Sure, it's not as direct as in Max but there are Corona shaders to replicate this behavior.
The Corona Color Mix shader. Level drives the global output level while brightness affects only the color channel. You can also use it to invert a texture color/values quickly.

Or the Corona Mixture shader, which is a bit more complex but gives more control over the blending parameters :
