Perhaps this has already been done but is it possible to map the movement of a camera to something like a playstation / PC gaming controller?
Someone told me that they had seen it done in a large architectural visualisation practice but I was skeptical.
The basic premise is that one of the thumb sticks would move the target and another the camera itself.
A more advanced version would allow the triggers to adjust the lens size / aperture etc.
It would be a much more creative free flowing method of exploring compositions.
Again it may sound stupid or it could have been done.

I think i saw script or plugin for camera control with gamepad many years ago, but maybe it's just a false memory. Have you considered to buy spacemouse or similar control device for improved navigation experience?

I can recommend a spacemouse from 3dconnexion. Takes a bit of time getting used to, but I find navigation in the viewport and setting up compositions soooo much better with it. I only wish you could track the camera movement with it for animations, but doesn't quite work.

You can record joystick controls using the motion capture tools:
Youd need to rig it to a camera but if i recall, having not used this feature in about a decade, its not that difficult to work with.
