Title: Corona is not using full RAM mabookpro M1 MAX
Post by: wasfrans on 2023-12-12, 12:48:33
Hi there I have a macbookpro 16" M1 MAX with 64GB of RAM. I see that corona is not using all my RAM.
Is there a way to force this. I can't find anything in the prefs.

lol. Thats kind of like requesting corona to fill your entire hard-drive. If your scene needs more RAM it will use it, most of the time keeping the RAM down is a good thing, since once you hit the max then you need more.

Just as said - Corona uses the RAM it needs, and "using more" would bring no benefit (as well as the fact that it could only be done by filling up the space with garbage anyway ;) ). In fact, if RAM maxes out, then you can run into crashes and slowdowns, so you most definitely do not want all your RAM used!

Hi there @wasfrans
As said before, there's no need to use all of the RAM installed in your computer unless it is necessary.
By necessary, I mean if your scene has a lot of geometry, has a lot of materials applied to objects, textures are very memory-expensive, etc.
And as @Tom said, "If RAM maxes out, then you can run into crashes and slowdowns" or any other unexpected behavior.
It is always best to have your scene project organized and, most importantly, optimized; I mean, using rendering instances, low and high poly objects (depending on the distance from the camera), keeping materials setup as simple as possible, etc.
I hope this helps.

thank you for the replies. It's not that I want corona to use all of the RAM.
In the old days, for example with photoshop, you could tell the app what max RAM it could use, like 80% for example.
Sometimes I'm tired of waiting :)

As mentioned, increasing RAM usage (even to just 80% so it never uses it all) wouldn't speed anything up. Corona uses all the RAM it needs, and using more would not bring a speed increase at all, not even a tiny one - there is simply no use for that RAM (no data to store there, no textures to hold there, nothing). Unless you run out of RAM, the only thing that affects speed is the CPU usage.

Clear. Thank you.
