Title: need help with leather
Post by: eufrazine on 2014-06-09, 16:13:00
Hey guys, corona rulez :)
I would appreciate some tips about how to achieve some really good looking leather - in this case red (I know these chairs are really never red :)) Or if you have some other tips how to improve the rendering I am all ears.
Thanks a lot :)

It does come in red: https://www.google.se/search?q=barcelona+chair+red&tbm=isch

The key for leather is largely about getting the reflections right. It needs to have the right level of reflectivity, and also the right level of glossiness, and the glossiness must be mapped! Things like wrinkles and the natural structure in the leather causes the reflection glossiness to drop, and the bits that are worn down by sitting have a higher gloss.

Agree with CaptainObvious, you should have some overall higher glossiness but bump killing it locally to surlign its touch, like in http://www.creativecrash.com/3dsmax/tutorials/materials-and-texturing/c/leather-material where you could feel almost  like seing things in it's reflection if it wasn't bumpy.

And please shave the foot of chairs ;D

wow! I have seen the green ones in villa Tugendhat and the black ones that are everywhere (mostly some replicas) but it´s great to know red is also an option :) Thanks for great tips with the leather and don´t worry, I will do the shaving :) (hairy legs are not fun :))
