Title: Quixel Displacement.exr > Linear or Embedded color mode?
Post by: ShynnSup on 2023-03-08, 14:16:58
Hi all,

I was wondering which color mode to use when using .exr for displacement. Linear or Embedded? I can't find anything related to this in documentation, thanks!

Is there any difference when you use one or another?
I think the EXRs are always linear, so I would not expect any difference.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong ;) When using EXR files for displacement, it is generally recommended to use the "Linear" color mode as EXR files store data in a linear color space. Using the "Embedded" color mode would apply a gamma curve to the data, which would alter the displacement information and potentially result in incorrect or unpredictable results.

Not if the EXR's embedded color is linear. Then there is no difference if you choose "linear" or "embedded" (since embedded = linear too).

I am not 1000% sure, but all the manuals I checked online state that EXR is always using linear color space.
