Title: Displacement Map
Post by: surojgurungptea on 2022-10-31, 20:31:39
Hey guys. I'm struggling to think of a method to create a fold in the seating area where it curves. I tried to detach the small section in the model and add a fabric fold displacement. But due to it being detached, the displacement will go over and under, showing the separation from the original model. How do I make displacement map only affect a part of the model? Do I have to unwrap and make a custom map? Or is there a way to paint an area where the displacement map will only have effect on.

Thank you.

I would just model it, or use 3ds max's displacement modifier on those selected curve vertices just fit the gizmo so it fits at the bend, and then just collapse it down to mesh

There are many ways how you can approach such task and none of them requires detaching polygons. I'm lazy to write detailed description, so i threw quick scene as an example for one of the approach. It's probably not the best method and certainly not the one i would choose myself, but it's one of the easiest to show in one picture without needing to write lengthy description :] You can replace the gradient with custom painted texture, or even with vertex colours if your geometry is dense enough. The most important part here is that you want to have a nice border with 0 displacement in your texture, so there would be no sharp transition between displaced and not displaced parts.

Thanks guys. I tried the 3ds max displace method from a youtube channel before. Found it hard on the curved :(
Romullus, that method looks sweet. But I have no clue how to do it lol. I tried but result was bad. Is there any tutorial on it in the internet?

I don't know, there probably is tutorial for anything on the internet if you know where to look for it :] I think it should be possible to figure out how to setup local displacement from my picture, but i'll try to record short video explaining the process, when i'll have some spare time.

Thank you, Romullus. I'd be over the moon with that video. Meanwhile I was thinking, to make a layered MTL with original layer and another layer for displacement map without tiling. Custom UV unwrap and add opacity map. Is this a viable way of doing it? I always stumble upon this problem and end up leaving it. Want to master one method I can rely on. Thank you!

Yes, that would be a valid method of approaching this task, but don't use opacity, instead plug the map as the mask into layered material.

Here's the video that i promised:

And here's another method with vertex colours:

You can even combine both methods on one model if you want :]

Thank you so much Romulus! you are God send! My mind was trying to figure out a way and i just couldnt lol. Thank you again!
