Title: Is there a way to fine-tune the glossiness in Coronamaterial?
Post by: Ceyes on 2014-04-28, 12:07:09
Is there a way to fine-tune the glossiness in Coronamaterial? The value of 0,99 gives me a bit to much glossiness and the next possible value is 1,0.  Now i controlled the value via map. In this case you have 255 steps for glossiness. To have 3 digits to define the value (i.e. 0,995) would be great.

Greetings

You can increase precision of 3ds max's spinners in preference settings or use 16/32 bit bitmaps to get more than 256 steps.

Increasing the precision of 3ds max's spinners doesnt have any effect in Coronamaterial. Now i have a solid colormap with 254,254,254 in the map-slot, but this is still to much of glossines.

Thanks

If you alt-drag in spinners, it moves in smaller increments, and ctrl-dragging is larger increments. You can also just directly type in any value you want.

Yes, thats what i have done ;). if i wrote 0,995 it always corrects it to 0,99. The spinners are not so important, but the rounding of numbers.
Try to give an coranamaterial a glossines 0,995 and you´ll see the result.

Max 2014 here, I have no problems with typing values like 0,987654.

update: aaah, ok, looks like the results are indeed the same

And here I thought Corona was quite sufficient in this regard, because the transition between 0-1 in glossy seems "slower". In Vray, with Ward mode, 0.99 is like completely blurry suddenly.
Maybe this is something that could be alleviated altogether with more advanced ior model, or maybe blend two materials with peak reflection being 1.0 glossy, or simply use some slight scratch map in specular slots
instead of glossy value to give the off-blurry look.

Sorry guys, but i clearly see difference between 0.99 and 0.999 glossiness.

Edit: difference between 0.99 and 0.995 is there too, but it's quite hard to see.

And if you want to control it with texmap, there is very simple way to fine tune it:

That´s not true .... only before you restart max ;). After a restart the given value (i.e. 0,9954) is not roundet to 0,99 even more.

Thanks for tips.

Greetings and happy rendering
