Title: Taking too long
Post by: klipanos on 2014-04-13, 16:28:43
I made a simple scene for one client and it's taking too long to render and i have too much noise in the scene.
It takes 15 minutes to calculate and to get this result 3 hours . Resolution 2000x1160.
I use only corona sun and three corona portal mtl. The rendering settings are the defaults.
Any ideas why it's taking too long and about hte noise??

1. What are your system specs?
2. Show us some wires, materials.
3. Where and how do you place your portals?

Hi Maru!!
My system is an intel i5 2,26 ghz, 120 ssd, 8 gb ram

I dont have any particular geometry ,and my materials are very simple, i used many of them from materials corona settings.
If needed i can show materials.

I placed the portals nearly inside the glass material...

And it is wrong to place portals inside. You should place them outside of the window holes or perfectly capping the window holes.

good

bad

Hope that helps. Also, you shouldn't use very bright materials but I don't think you have any.

btw, are you using HD cache?

I allready tried putting the portal just outside... same time...
and i putted inside to bypass the glass if there is the problem...
is very strange for that scene to take that long... my previous one was 5 times bigger and i had no problem...

I didn't quite understand about the HD cache... i have two one is 120 GB SSD, and one is 750 GB HDD on the same laptop... if that is you mean...

The appliances over the kitchen looks suspiciusly brigth. Check those with an albedo pass (add them in the render elements tab F10)?.
Also double check your windows glass material refraction mode.
Did you illuminate with geometry emitting or hdri?

Not HDD but HD cache. You should always have "HD cache" as secondary solver in interior renders.
If it's not the case, then maybe you will find some hints here:

btw, question of the year: what does HD in HD cache stand for? :D

ahahahaha!!!!
I allways use hd cache!!!!!!!!!!

I checked the glass, and the appliances are fine..
I illuminated the scene with just a corona sun and three corona portal mtl

i thought there was an hdri in the environment slot because trough the door we can see some background, and sometimes reflect materials without fresnel looks like they  have a metalic cover (as the coffe machine has).

I 've placed a plane and a bitmap ... i do this often to match real outdoor for the living space i make the render... this particular is a photo taken from the balkonie of the house..

I can't find though a solution to my problem.. i tried everything... i also cleared the scene of any objects still too slow....

One last...
Why dont you try the "Mtl. override", assignit a defaut Corona Material and exclude geometry (like glass for example) one by one until you find the offending peace of geometry?...
Not one by one off course, you can do it in groups. Just cheking stats in the corona render frame until you see a dropdown.

How did you do this? What kind of material did you assign to the plane?

Very simple ... i made a corona mtl and putted the jpg...

Did you turned off cast/receive shadows and visible to reflections/refractions options for that plane, or is it sitting between your enviroment and your subject and blocking most of the light?

So this is probably the cause of your problems.
And how did you make it glow? It clearly glows in your renders.

To do this properly you should use CoronaLightMtl with your bitmap and "emit light" disabled.

I just put it between my enviroment..

I have the sun directly hit it... i used a corona mtl and nothing else...
I'll make some tries to see what happens and if this is the problem....

I just put it between my enviroment..
So that's why it's taking so long.

Oh my god!!!!!!!
So you say that i must turn off shadows and visible to reflections .....????
i must finish a bathroom that i'm doing and i'll give it immediately a try!!!!
Thank's Guys!!!!!!

No, turning of shadows and other visibility settings is still quite inefficient way. Use CoronaLightMTL with disabled emission for your background planes. That will give you best performance.

Thank's Guys!!!!!!
It realy was like magic happens!!!!! i putted a coronalightmtl with disabled the emission and the total time dropped dramaically!!!!
In 45 minutes and 2000x1120 resolution i have this result!!!! which is a very nice time!!!!!!
The others would take me at least 2 hours to reach this results!!!!

I ran into this problem just the other day.

I used a plane a good distance away from the buildings, a place a cloud bitmap on them. For a BG and to cast reflections. The problem i had was no matter what material or settings i tried, it always changed the lighting.

The first picture was render with the cloud plane.
The second picture i rendered without the cloud plane, and used a material id/alpha to mask in the clouds and reflections on the windows.
Notice the huge difference in the lighting and shadows.

Things I tried to get it to work in the render.
Corona Material with a variety of combinations, Translucency, Opacity, and Refraction.
Corona Light Material with and without Emit Light on.
I even excluded the plane from casting shadows.

Everything resulted in the place changing my lighting and shadows. It however did not increase my render times and noise.

My advice try a render without the Background Plane and see if it clears it up any. Maybe even try a render without the glass too.
