Title: Corona not using all the threads (Threadripper 3970x CPU)
Post by: garciabores@gmail.com on 2021-04-28, 10:43:06
Hi there.
We have a warning in Corona log which says Corona is using only 39 of the 64 threads available. And that I should click there to use all of them.
We looked into the resource manager and detect that, even clicking the warning to make use of all the threads, the CPU is only using 68% of its resources, when in other nodes is using (when rendering) 100%.
The problem is even worse considering we have two extra render nodes with 128 threads each (3990x), which are sitting there doing nothing.
Is it a known issue due to incompatibilities?, is there any workaround about it?. We need to solve this.
By the way, we have set -1 in System #of threads override.
Find attached the pictures
Thanks in advance

Hi,

Could you show screenshot of your render setup>system>Coron system settings window? There are two overrides for number of threads, maybe you're confusing it with override for interactive rendering.

That looks fine and shouldn't generate the warning - one question, that is the grab from the machine that pops up the error? You mentioned having nodes, so one important thing to note is the System settings are not sent with the scene but are set at a system wide level (this would also mean you get the warning on every scene, on any machine configured to use less nodes).

BTW the -1 you mention is IR, not final render - for final render, the top right value "# of threads" is the one that counts, where 0 is "use all available".

Thanks for the fast answer.
Yes, this is grabbed from the machine displaying the pop-up. It was rendering locally when it did pop-up.
So, as far as I understand, there's no problem for Corona using all the threads, even it shows the warning pop-up and the CPU is only working at 68%?.
Is there any known bug about it?.
Thanks in advance

Hi! Well the pop up means something is restricted - but those settings are not what is restricting it as those are correct for "use all threads" (and so, would not cause a pop up).

Clearly Corona is not getting access to all the threads, so rendering is slower than it should be, but it's not clear from this what would be causing that restriction as it is not these settings. There's no known bug afaik, lots of people using 3970X machines, so it looks like it would be specific to your system from what I can see so far.

Can you share full info on host software and version, hardware for this particular machine, thanks!

OS Windows 10 Pro
3ds max 2020
Corona 6
Forest Pack
RailClone

TRX40 Motherdrive
Threadripper 3970x
64Gb DDR4 RAM
SSD Drive
1Gb LAN
I don't know what else could be useful.
I 'll try to see if the error replicates in the 3990x nodes opening and rendering the scene directly there.
Any info will be appreciated.
Thanks
