Title: displacement IR
Post by: koubankeo on 2020-03-18, 08:03:06
Hi,

will it ever be possible to set displacement in IR?

thanks

wrong question?

is there a plan to displacement in interactive rendering?

It works.
Only thing is, after changes, restart IR.

I think that is what koubankeo is looking for. To change displacement settings/camera position and have it update in the IR automatically. Sometimes the scenes need a moment to start the IR and then it quickly becomes time consuming.

I'm talking about this. And if I have to restart the IR every time, it's not IR :)

IIRC, devs are aware of the issue and are working on improving it.

Yep, we're aware of it and hope to have it solved. If displacement is changed, that affects the geometry, which forces a reparse to the object's geometry. So the whole image needs to be recalculated. We plan to fix it how it is for Max. Only changing displacement in material causes an update of the object with this material. The displacement is not (and most probably will not) be updated for example, when rotating camera as that would make IR more or less unusable (this is relevant only when the displacement is configured to use screen space resolution in pixels as seeing an object from a different angle will have a lower quality of displacement...)

I get it that it might be uncomfortable for whole scenes.
But when I set up a material, on a primitive like a cube, a plane or a sphere, just to adjust displacement in relation to the other material properties, it is annoying as hell to restart the IR for every little change.
Here, I strongly assume, an automatic IR update would be most welcome and not very time consuming.
Make it an option, please, if it sucks in a case, users won't switch it on. But for setups of materials, it would be a great helper.

Well, if you use viewport IRR (Alt+R) you can already enjoy it. Just be aware that higher quality = slower response

"Enjoy" might not be the best choice of word here, but it is better than nothing.
It took me a while to understand that setting a number in render passes prevents me from navigating in the scene / object.
It seems slower in response than the "actual" Corona IR, but I can change displacement parameters "pseudo" live, that's what I wanted to.
Thx for the suggestion.

Well... Yeah, for now we enjoy small victories - getting high on our own supply :D
