Title: New year - new system. Dual processors
Post by: VIZSET on 2020-01-12, 19:11:08
Hello!
I plan to build a new config, please help to assemble. I have some questions:

1. Can Corona work with dual processor system?

2. Intel or AMD for dual system? Which CPU model? I read that only Xeons can work together.

3. I plan to use 2 videocards (maybe 2070 super), for Redshift for other tasks, it is okay for price/speed?

4. What motherboard do you recommend for that config?

5. What technical details should I pay attention to?

Thanks!

1 & 2) Yes, but single-processor is much better choice right now. Choose from 3960X / 3970X / 3990X Threadrippers based on budget.

3) Get one good card (like 2080ti RTX), not two mediocre. You can add second good one later. With GPU rendering VRAM amount is important.

4) Any TRX40 board if you'll buy 3960X / 3970X / 3990X Threadrippers.

5) Good amount of fast memory ( Ideally 128 GB DDR4 3200), high quality PSU (Seasonic 1000-1200W for dual-GPU setup), case with good air flow.

1-2) Single Threadripper really faster than dual Intel config?
Is it real create dual Threadrippers system in this case?

Could you advise a cheaper solution?

5) RAM frequency - is important parameter, right? Difference between 3200 and 2333 worth the overpayment?

Not possible.

Ryzen 9 (3900X or 3950X) are cheaper than Threadrippers but still give fantastic performance. How did you plan to afford Dual-Xeon which is multiple times more expensive ?

Not possible.

Important and worth the price difference, particularly for Corona.

Okay, thanks!
For example, price for two Xeon E5-1630 v4 similar to one Threadripper 2970WX.
Intel's core frequency is bigger than AMD. Or is it not that important? greater number of cores in AMD is better in this comparison?
What parameters are important too?

Corona Benchmark :- )

https://corona-renderer.com/benchmark/results

Xeon Ex-1xxx-vX cannot be dual-socketed, that's why it's "1" in name. Xeon Ex-2xxx-vX are dual-socket.

I intentionally don't explain this further as you can google most of this stuff with bit of research yourself. Depending on budget, buy Ryzen 9 or Threadripper 3xxx.
