Title: Corona Interactive renderer on c4d is incredibly unstable
Post by: casinowilhelm on 2020-01-02, 20:39:38
Hi there,

Corona on c4d seems very unstable when using interactive renderer.

Trying to use it on a job and it crashes more or less constantly. In particular enabling or disabling lights, or when scrubbing, but also just other times in general. Sometimes it crashes with a bugreport then hangs c4d (have attached latest one here) and sometimes just quits c4d.

Running c4d R20 on threadripper 1950x, win 10, 64gb ram, latest gfx drivers (rtx 2080ti) but it also dies on other pcs.

Hello, casinowilhelm,

so does it crash all the time in all the scenes, even simple ones? Or are you just working on one scene that is crashing all the time?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. It's a bunch of different scenes based around the same assets used in different ways. There's some substance mats, quite a lot of animated textures. RAM used never goes much above 50%. I'm sending you a test file that crashes pretty consistently.

Thanks a lot! We will investigate the scene and let you know!

Hi Michael, I have tested your scene file and am also getting a crash when scrubbing the timeline. Please bear with us whilst we investigate why it's happening.

Thanks! Glad it's not just me :)

I think it's in any scene with animated textures? Can't scrub without it crashing quite quickly - this is on a different scene to the one I sent (different geometry, lighting, but a very similar set of animated textures)

Howdy!

The cause is specifically the bump channel in the Plastic Black - Glossy material. If you disable the bump channel in that material, the crash no longer happens (at least in my tests). I didn't look to see if anything was animated with that material or not. Should be ok to disable that channel, as with how the scene loaded for me, there was nothing actually going into there, just a Normal to Normalizer, but nothing into the Normal.

We're still looking into everything, but that's one way to avoid the freeze in the meantime. Also, note that I replaced the set up with just a bitmap straight into the Bump, but that didn't solve anything - only turning off the bump seemed to work for me.

More info as we find it :)

Thanks! I will try that. A lot of these materials were created by the scene converter from a previous physical renderer scene BTW.

Most welcome! We'll still look into why this material behaves oddly, so hopefully there will be a fix for that - meantime this should get you up and running with the scene though :)
