I just encountered some strange crashing behavior when trying to Store the VFB after resetting the render settings in the attached file.
In it's current state, the file works just fine, you can Store the VFB without issue. But if you reset the render settings and try to Store the VFB after doing an IR it hangs and crashes max.
I've tried resetting render settings, clearing out the elements, turning the caustics and adaptive light solver on/off, and the crash still happens every time with reset settings.
What's bizarre is that if I open Max without any start file, so it's totally default and switch my render to Corona, the same crashing behavior occurs...
Has anyone else encountered this?

So, I've actually been able to nail it down to the nvidia denoiser "Fast preview denoise during render" being ticked.
Ticked = crash, unticked = no crash. That explains why resetting the settings causes a crash.
I've tried deleting the optix folder and reinstalling, with no change.
I'm running nvidia geforce 430.86 drivers and other pc with the same problem is running 419.67

Hi,
Which graphics card do you have?
Thanks,
Rowan

My PC has a GTX970 and the other a GTX1080

Hi,
Thank you for the information. I am not able to reproduce the crash here. Would you be able to create a minidump? Instructions on how to do this are in my signiture.
Could you provide me with some more information, which version of Max and Windows are you using? Could you also confirm the rest of the specification of your computer?
Thanks,
Rowan

Hi Rowan, I've attached the minidump.
Here are the pc specs:
PC1 (crashes): 3ds Max 2018, Windows 10 1903, Ryzen 2700, GTX 970 430.86, 32GB RAM
PC2 (crashes): 3ds Max 2018, Windows 10 1903, Ryzen 2700X, GTX 1080 419.67 , 64GB RAM
PC3 (crashes): 3ds Max 2018, Windows 10 1806, Threadripper 1950X, GTX 1070 419.35 , 64GB RAM
PC4 (crashes): 3ds Max 2018, Windows 10 1806, Ryzen 1700, GT 1030 430.86, 32GB RAM
All are running Corona 4
EDIT: added windows update versions
EDIT 2: PC3 actually does crash

Hi,
Thanks for the information, what I'd reccommend doing next is to reinstall Corona on the problem machines.
Could you completely uninstall Corona -> restart the computer -> Install Corona and see if it helps?
Thanks for your patience with this,
Rowan

Ok, I'll try this on one of the problem machines.
A little more testing revealed that I can Store the VFB while rendering and after the max pass limit has been reached without any crashes. It's only if I stop mid IR and try to Store.
-
Still crashes unfortunately. There was a bit of confusion in the office here about the steps I was taking to cause the crash, so I just want to clarify.
If you open the max file I first attached here, go to the performance tab and tick Fast Preview Denoise During Render, so it's on. Then start an interactive render in the Corona VFB, then click stop and try to Store from VFB, it crashes all 4 computers now (including the Threadripper, I'll edit that earlier post).
Hope that helps.

Hi,
Thanks for clarifying your reproduction steps, I can reproduce this now.
I will report it to our dev team ASAP.
Thanks,

Cheers Rowan, glad you could reproduce it. Good luck

Hi,
I have managed to narrow the crash down to one setting. If you switch from "Use photographic exposure" to "Use simple exposure" the crash will no longer happen. Also disabling the "Fast preview denoiser" stops the crash from occuring.
I hope for the time being this is a suitable workaround.
Thanks,
Rowan

Cheers, we're just disabling the "Fast preview denoiser" for now

We have just released Corona Renderer 4 Hotfix 1, which fixes the issue you reported: https://corona-renderer.com/download/
Please download it and check if everything is fine for you now.
