Do you know if you can tell a hdri not to affect an object?

right there is no that option, but if you desperately need this, you may place big sphere in scene and apply lightMTL with hdri, and there you can exclude object, but it may render slow

True true, you also have to flip the normals in the sphere so they are facing inward.

A sphere or other object with light material illuminating the scene will not render as fast as standard environment. This is not really a recommended workflow in Corona.
Can you tell me what exactly is "excluding an object from HDRI" useful for? What is the typical use case?
