Title: 3ds Max crashing on denoise
Post by: Dfenton on 2018-08-16, 13:34:09
Hello,

I am rendering a high-res image at 10,000 pixels on the long side. When I click stop in the Corona VFB and the denoising process begins, 3ds Max crashes every time.

I have an i9 with 112GB RAM. I'm attaching the 3ds Max minidump.

Has this been encountered before?

Hi, thank you for your report. CTD does seem to be caused by Corona. Can you share the scene, where it's happening? Or at least a snippet of the scene where it's happening as it'd help us immensely with the investigation.

Thank you

I would guess it's either running out of RAM (even 112GB, if there are some denoised render elements and/or other things that demand a lot of RAM), or overheating.
The easiest way to find out would be monitoring RAM usage and CPU temperature during the denoising stage.
If it's RAM, here are some tips on optimizing the usage: https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/12000023310
If it's overheating, then you will simply need to take care of it (by dusting the pc, replacing thermal grease, getting a better radiator, etc.).

It's still guessing, so it would be definitely best to provide the problematic scene as Ivan suggested.

Thank you Dung & Maru!

The scene does have a huge amount of displacement going on - admittedly not an efficient use of it - and I know that this is a significant draw on RAM, which could perhaps be something to do with it. Although I do not know how this effects the denoising phase. In the end, I rendered the scene with the denoise set to gather for later, and did it in the Corona Image Editor (I didn't actually have to denoise much at all in the end).

I'll try to upload a portion of the scene if it happens again.

Displacement needs some RAM, and denoising needs some RAM. If both need too much RAM, it will blow up, which most likely happened in this case.
Moving to resolved, but feel free to bump it if there are some other problems.

Thanks Maru! In the end I upgraded the RAM which helped somewhat. My scene wasn't set-up to use displacement efficiently. Lessons for next time!

Note that there are very large memory savings to be had with Corona 3 and the new "Apply automatic bump" option (enable it, reduce your displacement quality e.g. from 2px to 4px).
