Title: Corona distance problem with certain shapes.
Post by: lupaz on 2018-04-08, 23:05:02
Hi all,

Any idea why the attached is happening?

My goal is to use text to make a boolean with CoronaDistance in opacity. But I keep getting these artifacts with text mostly (even after converting to editable poly).

I'm using Max 2016 with Corona 1.6 hotfix 3.

Thank you.

Try to add small chamfer to your text mesh and see if that helps.

It did. Thanks!

It is known issue with the distance precision. Hopefully, one day that will be fixed and we don't need those workarounds anymore.

I asked about this since I am sometimes getting unreliable results even with the chamfer trick, sometimes simply moving or rotating the objects can result in artifacts. Unfortunately it's not fixable, at least that's what I was told.

I have had similar issues and discovered adding loops/subdivision to your object will greatly improve the utility of the distance map. It's as if the map is trying to find edges to base its distance calculation. This should fix your issue as it did mine.

Subdividing both meshes would be another idea.

Maru, if there's a slight possibility this gets looked at it would be fantastic. Subdividing models and using chamfer modifiers may only work in certain conditions, it'll not work well on CAD meshes for example or is just too work intensive if you want to use many different objects. If Vray's Distance Map is more stable it might be worth looking at what they do and try to use their solution in Corona.
