Title: Creating fluffy/wool carpet/blankets/name it - Let's make it all together!
Post by: zbieraj on 2018-02-22, 13:16:10
Hi guys!

So I have been working recently on a visualisation where the client wanted to put more or less this HAY's carpet:
http://hay.dk/en/hay/accessories/living/rugs/peas

The model on 3dsky was terrible so I decided to make one from scratch. I made it to look like this:

Cloner with sphere + hairs from two planes (in the middle of a section of the top spheres and second one in the middle of a section of the lower spheres).

But this look a bit lame. Moreover, when I tried to use it in my scene, it looked, in my opinion, really bad:

Moreover, it is rendering for incredibly long time.

So my question to you guys is:

I was wondering if we can all together come to some solution and share it as an example file in this thread so everybody can use it :).

I would try displacement with a layer stack and use different maps.
But I don't know if this will do the trick.

I think that will not work. Results should be like this:

You need a hair like geo combinded with those and with a displacement on those balls you should get rid of that oversmooth look.

My 5 cents - stop modeling the individual balls and just create a nice texture for displacement and bump.

That still looks better than those balls, doesn't it?

It depends on your view distance... the closer the more detailed you need the model and/or your map to be.

Or maybe create a different texture for the sides? The problem seems to stem from the fact that the simulated light occlusion in the valleys appears on the edge too. If the map on the edges of the carpet was lighter in those areas, it might look better.

Maybe you can borrow some ideas from this post: https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=2466.msg68014#msg68014

P.S. moving this topic to I Need Help board, as it hasn't anything to do with C4D specifically.

The reason why it was in C4D was that is I am struggling to get the right effect in C4D. There will be a bit different approach to it in Max.

So far i didn't see anything C4D specific. Of course i can move the topic back, but i think, that all Corona users can benefit from this topic, especilly if some briliant ideas will be generated :]

May I ask you for your displacement map?
