Chaos Corona for 3ds Max => [Max] I need help! => Topic started by: 3drealism on 2018-02-16, 08:48:13

Hi,
There are a couple of tutorials online on how to use vector map displacement in Corona, but they are 2017 or earlier. I am using 2018 and there is no vector map displacement option in the standard maps. Please advise.
Thanks, Theo

Hi,
it seems the map is marked as incompatible, although it can be used with Corona. If you show incompatible maps, the Vector Displacement map appears in General category.
-
Yes, I clicked Incompatible but it still does not show.
-
What version of Corona are you using? I have 3ds Max 2018, and the Vector Displacement shows, even without checking view incompatible.
-
I am using 1.7 (hotfix 3) and also with 3ds Max 2018.
-
Does the map show up with other render engines selected?
-
Rolled back to Corona 1.7.3 here and the Vector Displacement does disappear, unless Show Incompatible is checked, in which case it reappears for me (previously, I had Corona 2 DB Feb 8th installed)

Thanks, Tom, I switched to Mentalray and it appeared and applied the Vector Displacement Map to my Corona material. Then changed back to the Corona renderer. It is a workaround that works fine for now. But with Corona renderer selected I can not see it with either compatible or non-compatible ticked.

I got the look I wanted with the vector displacement map but when I tried to render it at high res I ran out of RAM. I am finding Corona very hungry on RAM when rendering at high res even without the vector displacement map. My image is 12,000 x 9,000px and I have to render my image in smaller regions and stitch together, which is no problem but now I am trying to render a small region of the above size and with the vector displacement map, it just can't do it - it sits on "Calculating displacement" for hours. My RAM is 24GB which I thought would be enough. Any advice? Thanks Theo

24 Gb may not be enough, certainly when displacement is used as it can consume a lot of memory.
There is some info on https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/5000675894-there-is-not-enough-system-memory-to-process-displacement-at-current-settings-stopping-render- (https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/5000675894-there-is-not-enough-system-memory-to-process-displacement-at-current-settings-stopping-render-) and https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/12000023310-i-am-getting-a-sudden-rise-in-ram-usage- (https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/12000023310-i-am-getting-a-sudden-rise-in-ram-usage-)
Mostly, be sure to be using Screen size rather than World size if possible. If using World size, be sparing with it :) You can try increasing the Screen size to reduce memory needs. Be sure to use Displacement for "large" features, but bump mapping for "small details". Other tips are on the pages linked above. I hope something here helps!

we fixed the listing as incompatible somewhere in dailies AFAIK

Thanks, TomG and Ondra. It's most appreciated.

Yup: https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=17972.msg117547#msg117547
So it will be fine in the next version of Corona.
For the current ones, I guess it is not a very problematic issue.
