Title: How would you model a massive tree root for using as a table?
Post by: Kost4d on 2017-10-25, 22:16:08
Hello!

Browsing my modelling tasks and challenges I found some really tricky case - a table which has a tree root instead of a legs. A table top itself is just a round glass peace.

But I really faced a problem how to model a tree root the kind I need?

The model could be probably done procedurally. For example pflow solution saved as a mesh.
But convincing procedural texture could be a problem.

Photogrammetry would be the best way probably.

Yup, photogrammetry would be best, although it shouldn't be big deal to do in zbrush or even blender sculpting tools.

IMO, best is to box model, subD, add a bit of bump/displacement & texture procedurally.

eg.

(done with Blender & Cycles, since Corona SA doesn't support displacement)

Photogrammetry is not efficient in case where are many holes & occluded parts. It's fine for generating the base mesh but finalizing it will take a lot more time than ie. manually model or making a procedural tree then cutting it.
