Title: Corona Renderer 1.7 Release Candidate 1 for 3ds Max out now!
Post by: TomG on 2017-09-21, 01:20:03
Corona Renderer 1.7 RC1 for 3ds Max is out now!

Everyone with an active FairSaaS or Box with Subscription license has access, and the download is in the usual location: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/mswauuv1afec8am/AAA5OKrd_QujokDM3mxQ7S40a

A Release Candidate is close to being the final release, but we need your testing and feedback to catch any remaining bugs or other issues from real world testing!

Here's just some of the major new items in 1.7:

- Much faster rendering, in some scenes up to 8 times faster, thanks to the combination of many speedups (new DMC sampler, new adaptive direct light algorithm, faster adaptivity recomputation, and more)
- Memory savings, in particular with render elements
- The Corona MatLib, a collection of over 300 ready to use materials
- Dedicated Hair shader, plus compatibility with 3ds Max native Hair and Fur, Ornatrix and Hair Farm
- Dedicated Skin shader
- New additions to the CoronaMtl: a new SSS mode, and Dispersion
- A dedicated Corona Camera
- UVW Randomizer
- Bump Converter so that any map can be used as a bump map
- The Corona UI displays properly on high DPI monitors
- And of course many other improvements!

Reminder: Scenes saved with 1.7 will not open in 1.6, so you may want to keep separate versions of the scene while testing.

Thanks!
   Tom

Hello Tom, thank you for the link.
I'm working on 1.6.1 ... and I'm obviously motivated to move to this 1.7 ... however I'm not sure about how to do ... and most of all I'm working on projects for a client ... Is this version stable enough to be able to transfer my work in progress from 1.6.1
other question, in the download link Dropbox, there are a lot of files ... which are useful for the installation of the 1.7. another question, is it possible to have the 1.6.1 and 1.7 install at the same time ... if yes how. (in case too much bug, as I have to make my pictures next week) .. thanks.

Problem this time with dailies/RCs is that you cannot go back easily. I would not do it if you have a deadline ahead.

there are a lot of files ... which are useful for the installation of the 1.7.

You only need "corona-3dsmax-1.7-rc1.exe"

is it possible to have the 1.6.1 and 1.7 install at the same time ... if yes how.

You can have different versions with different max versions only on one box but not for one specific Max installation (there are scripts/workarounds though).

Conclusion: It would be the best to finish your current job and pick the newest RC afterwards :)

Good Luck

It's simple, find executable named "corona-3dsmax-1.7-rc1.exe" on dropbox folder, download it, check with your antivirus and launch installer. Simple as that.
Usually daily builds are stable enough for commercial work and RCs are almost as save to use as public releases. But i would not recomend to switch in the middle of important project, as 1.7 is not backward compatible with earlier versions - you will not be able to switch back without loosing your render settings.

As for the different versions in the same 3ds max, yes that should be possible, there's even an official guide how to configure such setup: https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/5000577837-how-to-run-different-corona-versions-at-the-same-time-

Thanks for your quick replies !!
I think it's wiser to wait ... actually.

What is RCs?
Last question, to use my different nodes, I imagine that I have only to installe the .exe on each computer?
thx

RC means Release Candidate. At this stage, the feature set is 'frozen' and only bugs get fixed.

Yes, you only need to run the installer, it takes care of everything.

RC stands for Release Candidate - at this point no new features are expected and only bug fixing and polishing is going on.
I have no no experience with multiple machines, but as far as i know you have to install same Corona version on all nodes for smooth DR experience.

edit: dang! i feel so slow today...

As the first bug after installing RC 1.7 MatLib is not working. Can't find the path.

What exactly is the problem? Are the material library files not installed to disk? Are you missing the MatLib option in menu? Do you get any error message when trying to launch MatLib or when dragging & dropping materials?

MAX 2016. I had Corona menu at the top of the bar, and everything worked like a charm.
Just before 10 min. I've installed RC 1.7 and Corona menu is missing, then I found it in Customise menu and put it back again, but then I got an empty box.
PS: I have noticed another strange thing. RC is installed but Corona showing the Daily from 15th.

Hi

Big thanks for the RC!

About the Corona Cam, what is the best way to use it. I want to change the f-stop, ISO and shutter speed when rendering, and thought I could do it by changing the cam settings instead of using “simple exposure”,  but it doesn’t seems to work…?

Does it need exposure control in the environment?
What should I thick in the render setup?

It looks like your installation got somehow corrupted. The new build correctly identifies itself as RC1. Please try:

1. Uninstalling Corona
2. Removing manually all Corona files from 3ds max root folder and plugins subfolder (all our files have "corona" in their filename). It should be these files:
  a) Corona_maxHairFur.dll
  b) Corona_Release.dll
  c) CoronaLib_Release.dll
  d) CoronaOpenExr2-v140-x64-Release.dll
  e) wxmsw310u_vc_corona.dll
  f) plugins/Corona<version>.dll
  g) plugins/CoronaUtils<version>.dll
3. Removing the whole Corona folder in program files
4. Installing RC1 again

Anytime the Corona menu is screwed up, you can reinitialize it by deleting file %localappdata%\Autodesk\3dsMax\<version> - 64bit\ENU\en-US\plugcfg\CoronaRendererMenus.ini

But how I end up with here when I didn't saw any occurring errors during the installation?
Anyway, thanks.

The last few installers (daily builds) and this one crash after instillation. Doesn't cause any problems, just a bit annoying. :)

Well i see so many amazing features! I remember days when i was beta tester for first Corona builds - when Corona was in alpha 3,4,5,6,7 and next RC's :) Every new build was so big surprise! And development was so fast - every bug i commited was solved in next build! I see that development is still very fast and a lot new features are here :) I'm not a owner of license and can't check all this stuff, but every new Corona version is getting me closer to buy this soft...I'm using Alpha6 for my fun projects, and when i compare a list of features in Alpha6 and 1.7 it's soooo huge milestep in development. One of the fastest developed software i ever seen.
Congratulations to Render Legion nad all beta testers and all people using daily builds which are reporting bugs - Your works matter.

Greetings
Krzysztof

is there any easy way to install material library to render nodes. Now every render node downloads 385mb aditional installer data.

the material library installation is pretty erratic, i have to install corona several times because the download of material just stops

Maybe because a lot of people try to install the new RC today. Or you have problems with internet connection.
If you choose Custom installation, you can avoid to download, every time, the 385mb =)

I have the same problem
The solution only found this. "Build from 14.09 download the library of materials stably. All the following builds could not download the library."

Hello,

Thanks again for this new release...

Unfortunately I notice much more flicking in my animation scene than the older version (with the same scene and the same parameters : 100 pass limit and full denoise :0,7  the 1.6 version present no flicking at all)
In comparison three exemple below, done with 1.7 version.

I hope you will fix this soon

Could you please provide the scene (simplified if possible) where this problem occurs? It would help us a lot.
You can upload the scene via https://corona-renderer.com/upload (https://corona-renderer.com/upload)

What is the actual benefit to using the Corona Camera?  is it quicker?

So far I am finding the standard max physical camera features a little more usable and then applying the corona cam mod if i want to store the tone mapping/post settings etc.  or am I missing something??

In lightmix i can't adjust inensity,  the spinners are "not inside" the framebuffer. Hope i'm clear :)

the camera prevents some bugs of physicalcamera, and genrally has better UI, because it is tailored for corona. Why is physical camera better for you? we can improve corona cam behavior ;ú)

Fair enough, I'll make sure I start using it.

The main things I prefer with Max's cam are, the 3 focus lines in the camera cone that are displayed for DOF showing where the DOF will fall off.

And, the camera clipping display (red mesh/line in viewport) too.

both very small things, but make my workflow slightly quicker and better

Hopefully this is not an oversight on my side but with 1.7 I cant seem to access Vray HDRi map
for use as my scene environment. It just does not give me the option. Please dont say I should
rather use Corona bitmap : )

Yes I also have Vray installed as I can choose that as the main renderer and use the Vray HDRI
as my environment , change back to corona renderer and then use it. This is just such a time waster

I have attached a screen grab showing the missing Vray rollout

Apologies if this has been addressed

Have a little trouble....
In lightmix i can't adjust inensity,  the spinners are "not inside" the framebuffer. Hope i'm clear :)

This is already fixed in our internal build which should be released as RC2 today. In the meantime as a workaround, you can shorten the light names. The problem here is with the "Boconcept Out Rigger Floor Lamp" name being too long and therefore stretching the UI.

It would be great to keep textures from Material library not on disk C only. I would like to use the other disks of my computer for textures. Is it possible for now?

Right now the only way to do this is to copy the material library contents elsewhere and crate a symbolic link from C:\Program Files\Corona\materials to the new location.

I would like to try the corona matlib but i get an error. Saying it was saved with Max 17. Were are still running on max2014(v16).

When was the last time you (re)installed Corona? We've made the library working with Max 2013+ for RC2. The RC2 is not released yet, but the material library file downloaded by the installer has already been updated. If you install RC1 now, MatLib should with Max 2014.

For users with troubles with matlib installation or download - it can now be downloaded separately from https://installer.corona-renderer.com/3dsmax/1.7 RC2/MaterialLibrary (https://installer.corona-renderer.com/3dsmax/1.7 RC2/MaterialLibrary)
Once you have the exe, place it in the same directory as the main Corona installer, and then run the main installer.

Not sure if this is the right place, but are there any plans for textures plugged into the Hair material to pick up the UV coordinates of the emitter object when using Max Hair&Fur? Right now it always renders as one solid color.

PS: Since I'm using Max 2018, which no longer has Mental Ray, I've plugged the Corona Hair Material in the "custom shader" slot of the H&F modifier. This seems to work except for the UV issue.

Also, could we have the option of having the emitter object render? Right now it automatically disappears.

AFAIK the mapping is broken on their side, we are planning to investigate it. Somebody told me vray supports it, we should be able to use the same fix.

The emitter object should be rendered in release candidates, we fixed that few builds ago

Yes, it works with V-Ray's native hair, which is why I was wondering about it. And, yes, you're right. The emitter renders. My mistake.
