Title: Film-like tone-curves / tone-mapping
Post by: vicnaum on 2013-09-04, 17:11:38
The idea is: Integrate film tone-mapping/ film-color to post-processing.

I guess now the corona has it's own internal tone-mapping / tone-curves to map real raw values to their screen presentation.

And it's also obvious that digital tone-curve is very different from film-one.
There are plenty of tables on the web with transformation from the real-world lightness data units to film density.
Of course one can apply some film-presets in photoshop/lightroom/etc, but doing it as a tone-map from raw render data should be much better.

Also you can implement some log format (google for "ARRI LOG C") - that can be used by cinema guys for better compositing.

Anyways, having some "Velvia" or "Fuji Superia" tone-mapping option in post-processing should look interesting (also the random sampler noise patterns can be similar to the corresponding film-grain :-).

Great.

Here's a sample of it:

Using EXR Linear -> CanonLog -> Fuji Astia 100 conversion (Nuke, Linear<->CanonLog LUTs, FilmConvert Canon C300 Film Profiles).

I wouldn't wish keymaster to end managing film profiles over other things:). Nuke already does the job perfectly.  Maybe being able to load a lut  in the vfb just for preview purposes ...
Same with lens distortion effects. What is the point of doing that on the renderer level?

Sorry, i woke up cranky :p

The golden rule of Corona community is that if it exists, it will be requested as a new feature. I am seriously waiting for the moment people start requesting minigames for VFB to kill some time when rendering :D

hahaha ..sure we do seem to request all kind of things!

Maybe a Tetris interactive rendering bucket mode!? ( hey..that's not even a bad idea ..imagine the level of addiction! )

Vicnaum. please don't take my comment wrong. i'm simply protecting my own "features agenda" :)  ..If you already use Nuke for Color conversions, chroma, lens dist, etc you are already using the most suitable tool for the job.

I even seen Pexeso (concentration pairing of dual cards), but never bothered to trace it.
