Title: Cpu limitation
Post by: chrisbojan on 2016-11-26, 19:57:54
Hey guys !

When using Corona interactive rendering my cpu usage is about 80-90 %
Is it safe to keep the cpu running at that usage for longer periods of time ? Or should i limit my usage somehow - haven't found a way yet
I'm using an i5 4460 3.20ghz

Have a great day !
Cheers

Depends on what you mean by "safe". If you think it could damage your computer - it shouldn´t if cooling is ok. Regarding environment and usage adjustments:

Render setup -> Performance -> Interactive rendering -> Max passes
Set to something like 300 so your CO2 footprint and electricity bill is treated with care. If it´s set to zero, interactive render will continue forever (always wanted to request to change the default from zero because of that).

Additionally:

Render setup -> System -> System settings -> Interactive rendering -> # of threads override (in older Corona versions it´s also in "Performance")
Here you can limit the thread usage - but you don´t want to :)

Good Luck

Thanks a lot for taking the time to reply !!

Well..my cpu is at 59 C when working in max..i think this is a decent temperature, isn't it ? :D

60° is ok, I see no problem here. Or is this an exam? :) You are about 10° away from the specs for this processor for long-term usage so no worries.

Good Luck

you shouldnt be doing anything cg if you are aware of cpu usage, as it strictly depends on cpu stresstesting. long and heavy periods of rendering for a few years will only decrease your chips lifespan from 10 to lets say 7, if oced, you wont notice it as probably you will upgrade anytime soon, though
check temps. anything above 80 i would consider a bit heavy and worth-worrying.

i have had coresponding chips-
i3-3220
i5 2500k (oced)
i7 2600k (oced)
i7 4790k (oced)
dual xeon 2670,

suffered from rendering only, 0 problems whatsoever even after 2 years of heavy usage for each.

Thanks a lot guys!

Well i'm pretty new to 3d so i was pretty scared when i saw that my cpu was at 80 %usage sometimes haha.

Anyway , now i have a clear picture about this whole thing thanks to your replies.

Thanks again Frood&karklin for clearing this thing out for me !!:D
Have a great day!

When you are not running IR, just the regular rendering, the usage should be as close to 100% as possible. ;)

I appreciate the help :D I've been keeping an eye on the usage lately and it is indeed close to 100%
