Title: Motion blur include/exclude
Post by: jasond on 2016-09-01, 15:32:27
I have a situation where I need to use motion blur on a single object. I tried the blur options in Corona however blur is applied to everything.

My example is animating a drill bit rotating at high RPM while the drill itself is slowly moving towards the hole. Only the bit should be blurred in this case but I can't figure out how to do this.

Is there any way to get this to work in Corona?

Thanks,
Jason

Speed difference between rotating drill bit and slowly moving drill should be enough to find right combination of motion blur duration where drill bit is blured enough and drill isn't blured almost at all. If for some reason that's not good enough, then maybe it's worth to render motion blured drill bit separately and then compose afterwards?

Hmmm I see what you mean regarding the shutter speed duration. It works ok for the drill bit at 1/200 and iso 6400 but the drill itself is still a bit blurred no matter how much I tweak the settings. I have multiple drilling operations at different speeds and motions so I'd need to change the shutter speed each time which is tedious since I'd have to bump up the ISO to keep the background colour consistent.

Seems compositing might be the only option, though reflections of the drill bit in other objects would be wrong.

Use simple exposure instead of photographic one, that way you don't have to worry about ISO or aperture. Shutter duration will govern motion blur, but exposure will stay constant.

Also you can try to scale up drill bit rotation speed, that will let you to use higher shutter speed and drill should look razor sharp. Although in animation little bit of motion blur always helps.
