Hi, just wanted to check if others are experiencing this too.
It often happens that if I open a scene saved with a pre-2017 version of Max, it crashes on opening. I see a list of missing assets, then I see the scene in the viewport with a checker pattern (I am guessing the textures/materials are loading) and then... bang! Classic "error occurred and the application will be closed" popup.
Analyzing the minidump indicates a graphics driver problem (I am not sure if it's my GPU driver, or the driver selected in 3ds).
One solution is to change driver type in 3ds Max to anything other than DX 11 Nitrous. No crashes then. It also does not happen in Max 2016.
Any similar experience? Known solutions?

I'm having the exact same problem. Updated my drivers and everything, but I just get the viewport checkers, then boom, gone. I can't even open the scene to save it back to 2016.
If I merge the scene into a fresh scene, it's fine, I just need to do all my settings again - frustrating.
Did you find a solution

I guess it will be long time before I adapt...
But I've honestly haven't seen people reporting it. Does it happen if you open scenes without Corona ?

Yeh, the scene in question for me is actually Vray - same scene in 2016 is fine. It works in 2017 up to a random point where it just stops working. Works fine if I change the display settings to Legacy 3D. But then I get random crashes when using snaps

aaah, the viewport code in 2015+ maxes... truly a marvel of stability :D

Update and solution!
I have randomly encountered this problem again, which made it super hard for me to work on some important files, so I googled for a solution (also found this thread by the way ;) ) and found this!

By the end of the thread you can read people reporting that uninstalling VizPark plugins fixed the issue for them. That's exactly what I did (just moved all plugins starting with VP from my 3ds Max/plugins directory to another folder - so that I can easily restore them), and voila! It works!
Will have to report this to VizPark, since their products are awesome, and we know that there are many Corona + VizPark users out there. I am guessing this is something specific to hardware/software configuration.

Happens to me all the time when I open second instance of Max!
Will try the vizpark fix.
