Im on the C4D version so no denoising unfortunately. I have rendered out an animation and unfortunately the grass is going off like a load of flashbulbs with white fireflies. I read its to do with reflection and that hdri can be a problem but I'm only using sun and sky. Unfortunately I'm going to have to rerender quite a bit of it and let the client down. I have already dimmed the reflections on the grass but its still really bad. Is the only way to get rid of fireflies to switch it off all together? Anything I can do in after effects? I have tried denoiser2 but that just smudges everything into a blur.

Have you seen this one? It's for 3ds Max, but should be analogous in C4D: https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/5000529356

Thanks Maru, yes I saw that one. I lowered the gloss to 0.5 or below and dimmed the colour a bit but unfortunately it didn't help. The other 'solution' isn't much of a solution if you have to not have the suns reflection on all objects in the scene. Probably best just switching off reflection for the offending grass mats? Have fireflies like this been fixed in the 1.4MAX release?

As stated in that article, this kind of fireflies is not incorrect - you would get the same thing when photographing with a camera. It's just sun reflected from grass blades.
Something like this:

Yes I see that. But it wouldnt be quite so bad if there was more consistency in the sampling but even with sampling locked every frame has different hot pixels where as in reality if you moved the camera in that grass photo you wouldnt get all the noisy highlight popping. The geometry is static. even if its a natural phenomenon it doesn't look natural in the 3D environment. Does the denoising feature solve this problem?
