Title: AO render element is noisy when using few passes + Denoise
Post by: amitshneor on 2016-05-24, 21:18:59
Hi
im using heavily the AO pass in my work.
thanks to the amazing denoise function, i can now render my frames in less time and less passess.

but...
the main image gets denoised and cleaned as expected, the AO pass is still noisy because i use few passess now.
is there a way that the denoising happens on the AO too?

thanks !

Do you mean AO rendered through CTexmap render element? You can increase max samples in AO map, that way it will get cleaner in lower amount of passes.

yes i use the CTexmap method...

i set the AO Samples to 64 and 32 instead of 16, and yes its cleaner but the render time is longer.

i guess i will need to find the good balance between the two..

Cheers !

Element denoising is not possible yet, but it is planned for 1.5.

although I am not sure if denoising extra texmap elements will ever be possible...

What if the denoising was run on top of the element based on the data from the whole beauty rendering?

Same point I would suggest.
To hell with accuracy, AO is approximate in nature anyway. Slap some Blur on it, with regards to preserving polygon edges and it accomplishes everything it needs to.
Need to apply some dirt? Bake some blurry AO mess and it's just fine, no need to crunch sample after sample for a taxing AO mix map.

Corona 1.5 RC2 is out now and I see that all my passes/elements are still saved without the denoiser. :(
Any plans for that in the near future? Not much use in post-production for so noisy elements... :/

Do you mean that they are saved without denoising if you enable denoising in the element's settings?
