Title: Over 300 pass, still noise..
Post by: selant on 2016-03-11, 23:38:28
using corona 1.3,  I still have noise in dof scene despite the pass count over #300  :(

Here is the problematic area :

Here are the settings :

What may be the cause ? Shall i keep rendering ?

Hi. Looks like one of those problems that are solved (or very much bettered) in latest Daily Build with adaptivity and denoising. So grab latest build, or wait till v1.4 is released (Scheduled April 1.).

ok thank you. So the question is if i dont upgrade, shall waiting for more pass will solve or not ? Because its over 8 hours of rendering for me

Don't wait. It won't be solved.
Just blur those noises in photoshop.

I'm pretty sure this type of noise can be sampled even without adaptivity, but it can take many passes (1000+) to resolve. You can easily check that by doing small region render. But with adaptivity and denoiser, which will be available in 1.4, you should be good in couple hours.

Needs more samples, less rays. Corona uses no smart interpolation for blurry effects, liek vray, but a naive one.
You simply need more passes (=antialiasing). Try to render 1000passes, but put AAvsGI even lower.
You have the worst case: Bokeh with strong reflections of lights. There is nothing worse, for an algorithm, that is based on averaging. One sample ends up being displayed on the disc of the Bokeh and STILL has to average against the very hot light or relection.

Adaptivity has shown exactly this case to behave way better.

Also dont put LSM on 4, it means that you shoot a lot of rays for direct lighting, which past the 50th pass is already propably clean.
Try lsm 1, AAvsGI 1 and just sample those shitty bokehs past 1000 passes. This should speed up the proccess.

Just try a daily with adaptivity. Or send us the scene so we can test it. We would love feedback on how it handles this situation ;)

DOF + strong metallic highlight= LSM1 GI8, 20 hours for small resolution on my dual-xeon, maybe few thousands of passes ;- )

It won't clean up. I clean up these small bits in Photoshop.

Thank you all for the suggestions and forecasts on the subject.

* I finally managed to upgrade to daily build (because i have max'14 and corona 1.3 legacy, daily upgrade has always been pain for me to succeed until the day. Cause always having errors on 3dsmax on start-up, there is something unclear about 2013/2014 case.. whatever..) - I seriously offer to prepare "daily-upgrae videos" for various 3dsmax versions (both in normal/legacy) to recover.

* And guess what ? Corona renders 50 pass and cleans up eveything in just  #20 minutes# of time!
Just 50 passes was enough and quality is acceptable without any noise or fireflies, just unbelievable for me as a result.

* I have a Quad Amd phenomII x4 965 Black Edition 3.40Ghz with 8gb ram, and is the first time i'm witnessing a render under 1 hour with acceptable quality.

Good work guys, keep it up developing..
