Title: Color threshold progressive render limit
Post by: viktaZ on 2016-01-23, 18:10:27
Hi there,

first of all I actually did take a look around the forum for a thread like this, but didn't really find anything of the sort...

So I believe it would be really great if the render process could be automatically terminated upon reaching a desired level of noise set by the user, not just number of passes or time limit.

Setting no. of passes or time limit is excellent for making quick automated drafts during, say, an archviz workflow, but if you wanted final production renders, you would need to make a well educated guess for automatic render termination or check the frame buffer frequently, to make sure they arenoise free.

Top that off with a series of images that need to be produced in succession, it is either guesswork in terms of noise or a hassle to check the frame buffer all the time while they render.

So rendering a series (and singular as well) of automated images by
-> setting time limit:
  - pros: fixed reder duration, excellent for quick drafts
  - cons: uneven level of noise between images, as light conditions and geometry may differ significantly, no guarantee for noise free images
-> setting number of passes:
  - pros: most likely an evened out level of noise between images, as same amount of sampling and AA is taking place
  - cons: no guarantee for noise free images, and time is anyone's guess
-> setting level of noise / color threshold
  - pros: guaranteed image quality, even at multiple image render, no need to check the progress on production renders for quality
  - cons: well, time is anyone's guess again

So I think a feature like this would make a nice addition, especially for users coming from vray...
If nothing else, it would make things more comfortable, by eliminating the guesswork part. :)

The bucket mode has a noise threshold option but I am not sure if it's working as intended yet. I agree with you though, something like this would be quite beneficial :)

edit: the bucket threshold does seem to work as intended so that's that :)

Yes, bucket mode has noise threshold option and it performs best if there are large flat areas (a wall - it will not need to be sampled that much) vs small noisy parts (these areas will be sampled more). For a better solution we still need to wait for proper adaptivity.
