Title: Black Fireflies
Post by: ricardobjerke on 2015-10-31, 18:10:45
We are getting this problem of getting these annoying "black fireflies". The more the scene is refined the most of black pixels we get.
We notice that it seems to exist a correlation between the segmentation of the mesh + displacement and this bug. For example, we are getting less black pixels if we turn off the turbo smooth modifier from the mesh or keep it to a minimum. Maybe it is a memory related problem (even though there's plenty of memory available during the render?) Any thoughts?

Hi,

what Corona version are you using? Have you tried latest 1.3 release candidate?

We are still on version 1.2.1. Has this been fixed in the new version?
We heard that some bugs were causing 3ds max to crash with the 1.3 RC and that's why we decided to hold on the updating for a little bit...

Hi, are you using ComplexFresnel map by Siger here and/or displacement?

Yes, both of them. Complex fresnel on the vase on the right and displacement on the carpet

There were some problems with using displacement on non-manifold geometry in 1.2.x. It was producing artefacts and so we have put some sanitization into displacement that fixed it. If you have access to the latest 1.3 RC could you just give it a shot on this particular scene? If it still happens, can you give us the scene so we can fix it (simplified if possible)?

Thanks,
Robin

Just tested it and it works like a charm. :)

But since you asked about ComplexFresnel as well, did it have anything to do with the bug too? Does that mean that complex fresnel is not 100% supported by Corona?

there was a bug in ComplexFresnel causing some NaNs. We fixed that by always checking the ComplexFresnel results in Corona before using them. So no NANs in 1.3

I have a similar problem, but i find it after using max 2016. (Corona version: 1.3 latest FairSaaS)
I am using complexfresnel. I try disabled displacement, but it wont help.

Can you try to unplug ComplexFresnel? Siger plugins are known for sometimes causing various problems with Corona.

Older Siger plugins were causing exactly this issue. Are you using the newest versions? Can you re-install them? http://www.sigerstudio.eu/product-category/plugins-free/
