Hey so i was thinking a render element maybe similar to the zDepth or Normals elements that shows some kind of representation the effect the DOF is having on the scene. I was thinking it could be helpful in production so you don't have to wait for the render to clean up before seeing how areas of the scene are being affected.

Sorry, but I don't understand this. What would such element look like, and what would it be used for?

I understand it as a heatmap, which would show you the amount of DoF blur for each pixel of the image

But it basically would be a Z-depth pass, just with gradient going not from white to black, but from black to white to black, right?

Great idea. Lenscare by Frischluft does something like this.

Do you want a render element to see what is in focus?

Yeah this is not bad idea at all. The camera range in viewport isn't very good indicator neither is the preview.

Personally my suggestion would be how mirrorless (esp. Sony) cameras do it with 'focus peeking' method. Which is sort of heat-map overlayed on top of the image where edges of objects in total focus (tack sharp) are red.
