@PhilW That's a great suggestion. Turns out the three materials did use C4D Bitmaps. I swapped them with Corona Bitmaps and it rendered :05 sec. slower, so that's nice. There are also Normal maps, but they already use Corona's Normal Map nodes.

@frv Yes, I too have always known that C4D would reliable scale depending on the cores. This iMac Pro has 18 and I just saw my M2 Max has 12 cores (8 performance and 4 efficiency). I would fully expect the new tech in these chips would easily make up the difference in cores, if not surpass it.

As I mention earlier, this Mac Studio wasn't spec-ed out specifically for this purpose, but I expected more. I made a graphic showing my four test just for giggles. Not sure if that info sheds any light on this issue. Since the C4D Grapes test shows a modest 21% speed increase, seems like this is a Corona-related issue. I use After Effects every day and the few jobs I've done on this Mac Studio have blown me away with how smooth, responsive and fast AE was. I did a bunch of tracking and used the new Rotobrush 3.o and it crushed it. Sigh.

I wanted to throw this into the fire if I may. We acquired a Mac Studio M2 Max with 64 GG RAM and a 500 GB drive. This wasn't mean to really be a workstation, but to control our server and be an occasional workstation. Anyway, a decently powered system nonetheless. I have a simple scene with three products (a deodorant stick, a tube and a small spray) set up in Corona. Simple materials and graphic for the labels. Renders look amazing as usual. A couple of lights and one EXR in the Corona Sky object. Just three object with nothing else. I rendered an image at 4k, 15 passes and Intel Denoise. It will be delivered in a video at HD. I don't think I can show the image here though, yet.

This one frame took 3 min. 23 sec. on my 2017 iMac Pro with 18 cores. Not too bad. I will have 3 to 5 seconds to render. So I rendered this same frame on the M2 Max. expecting at least a 30% time reduction. It rendered in 3 min. and 40 sec.! What in the hell is that about? I was expecting 3 min., maybe 2 min. 30 sec. on this new box, based on my other testing.

I rendered the C4D Grapes scene I like to do for simple CPU speed and got 2 min. 37 sec. for the M2 Max. The same iMac Pro got 3 min. 19 sec.

Looks like Corona doe not take advantage of the new chips, as others have been complaining about. So disappointing. I'm rendering at 2017 speeds.

I mean the new features are great and all, but the real selling point is fast rendering. Either Chaos isn't supporting the Mac fully, or Apple isn't providing the dev support to Chaos. It's a mystery.

[C4D] General Discussion / Re: Door and window models

Search the Asset Browser. You will find windows, doors, staircases, bookcases and other models with very customizable controls powered by an extensive Expresso setup (see attachment). I think you can adjust every item that makes up these models from the dimensions, how many panes, the frames, open or closed. The works.

Yes, you will need to either convert the scene or spend a few minutes replacing the C4D materials with Corona if you want. Technically, the C4D versions will render in Corona, but might not look as good. You can't always create things with zero work.

I think you really need to collect the scene properly. This scene is missing 3 textures, no light and no camera. That would not be a fair comparison to what you are seeing. You might have settings in those areas that would be different than the devs.

35
I think the issue is only a problem if it doesn't work, renders much slower or crashes a scene. The Corona Bitmap has more features, but it does cause some people some problems.

The biggest one for me was collecting a scene to be used on other system or Team Render (render form too) that used materials that had their texture maps stored in the Asset Manager. Those file names get changed to some random set of numbers in the collected tex folder and of course breaks the link. If you have a large scene with hundreds of materials, this is a massive problem. Even knowing it ahead of time and trying to change to C4D bitmaps in the material can also be a show stopper if you have lots of materials.

I too have that app and it is really amazing, but the client is trying to rush this launch, but doesn't have the product to send us. Ugh. Otherwise, taking a proper photo AND using Kiri was where my mind was going.

[C4D] I need help! / Re: Compositing with shadows
« on: 2023-12-20, 15:59:27 »
The client is asking for something nearly impossible in the fact that placing that bottle on a sandy and very bumpy beach will not magically distort your shadow to follow the contours. That is an artistic adjustment by the artist at the compositing stage. Make sure to also have a mask pass for just the bottle/object so you can add a shadow separately or distort the rendered shadow to match better.

Refraction might also be an issue. I don't remember if Corona can export a pass that retains 3D distortion data so the new background can be automatically distorted by the glass and/or liquid. If it can, I'd love to know how.

Also, a Shadow Catcher bug that I had reported long ago, was the intensity of the shadow setting didn't do anything at least on Mac C4D. Not sure if that bug is still there.

[C4D] I need help! / Re: How do you save your images?
« on: 2023-12-20, 15:51:11 »
PNG can only go up to 16bit, whereas .psd can go up to 32bit. Like others have said, depends on what you're rendering. Are you rendering animations? Volume effects? Smoke, fire, motion blurs? The higher-bit files take up much more space so you might not need that. A simple mask pass for example, does not need such a high bit depth. It can get confusing.

Some of the bit-depth limitation may only be noticeable in animations as dancing noise and banding that jumps around. Since you didn't post any images, maybe try the different settings and see what you think.

Good to know, but I do not have Zbrush. I know C4D has sculpting, just haven't spent too much time playing with it.

I was going to say that when I've seen this in the past, it was always with an older scene and older version of Corona. All I did was select EVERYTHING in the scene and paste them into a fresh scene. Boom. Back to normal. Maybe what was happening is that Viewport setting in a new scene has a different setting by default. Not sure, but it works.

[C4D] Daily Builds / Re: Corona Bitmap Fixed?
« on: 2023-12-12, 01:07:18 »
Running C4D r25, Mac OS 12.5.1 Monterey and Corona v11.0 release.

Just saw this. Well, here is a screen grab of my original scene (top), and that scene saved with assets and opened.

As you can see, the materials from The Pixel Lab that use Corona Bitmap in their construction, and I believe the texture files are within the converted folder in the asset browser, get assigned a random names to the texture files, but the links are not updated which breaks the links. I also see (shared) in the path of the bottom image.

Something still is not working. It is easy to reconnect them, but with a large scene that is not practical.

42
Well clearly I'll have to read up more on it.

Those are great ideas. I'll give a go and see how they look after coming out of the oven.

I also did some searching for textures. The only things that were close were most likely photogrammetry objects which look great, but their materials are very specific to that mesh. Fluid sim sounds interesting, but I'm not an expert in that. I could imaging doing a basic pour on it, convert to mesh and adjust from there.

I can only imaging the horror a.i. would come up with. haha

I think I'm going to turn this one down, but still work on it as a learning project.

Ah good to hear. Yeah, I'm not using the ACES tools. At first it sounded like a new color gamut system, but from what I've read, it's more like a LUT so I never use it.
