Hi. Are there any tutorials on the new image upscaling feature? I see a few options and wasn't too sure exactly how its working. I see the following options:

Render settings/General settings/Upscaling
Preferences/Interactive rendering/ Image upscaling factor
Render setting/Performance settings/Interactive rendering/Use upscaling

So do I just set it to always under the general settings and then apply it in the other menu if I want it active in the IR?

Thanks. :)

Tutorial is not done yet, those generally wait for the final release before beginning so can grab the final UI etc.

Render settings/General settings/Upscaling
For final renders, set how you want the AI Upscaling to be used. Disabled is default as you don't want to use it in finals. You can set it to Only Sequences if you want it to apply to final renders of animations only (and single, still images will not use it), or Always so that it affects final renders of stills or animations. This is for producing drafts, four times faster (but with loss of detail).

Preferences/Interactive rendering/ Image upscaling factor
This has always been there and is not new in Corona 12 Update 1. It does not use AI Upscaling, it simply makes an IR image twice as large (or three times as large, etc.) As a result, the image will be pixelated and blocky. It's for faster IR on large screens (4K etc) without having to run IR at a large size.

Render setting/Performance settings/Interactive rendering/Use upscaling
This is a similar thing to the previous option, except it is new and does use AI Upscaling. This applies only to IR and not to final renders. If enabled, the image is rendered to one half width one half height then AI Upscaled, so it renders four times faster, but does not look pixelated - but does lose detail.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the fast reply. Great video showing all the new features, I've just watched it. :)

I'm not sure it's working correctly for me and I seem to get different results.

In Cinema 4D 2025:
The image size when rendering is 1680 x 1050 in my settings. I do two test renders, one with upscaling on and one with it off. Both images render at 2980x1863.

In Cinema 4D R20:
The image size when rendering is 1680 x 1050 in my settings. I do two test renders, one with upscaling on and one with it off. Both images render at 1680 x 1050. The quality of the image with upscaling on is worst in Cinema 4D R20 also. (please see attached images).

TY about the video!

Can you share some more information on what you were testing - I am not sure which of the three upscaling options you had enabled, and I am not sure if your render was IR or final render. Thanks!

This was all IR rendering, although I tihnk I was getting the same results in final render too.

I just had the Use upscaling ticked under performance settings/Interactive rendering

Thanks about the video, glad you enjoyed it :) And ty for the extra info - I still have a few more questions, sorry:

In both versions of C4D, under Preferences, the Image upscaling factor is set to 1? (that could be set differently in each C4D version afaik, so something to check).

Do you have Lock IR Resolution enabled in the VFB2? Is the scaling in the VFB2 set to 100% in both versions of C4D? How are you controlling the size of the IR to be exactly 1680 x 1050?

The image upscaling factor in both is set to 1.

Lock IR Resolution is off on both. Scaling is 100% on both. I set the resolution in the output C4D menu to 1680 x 1050, then when an image is rendered I'm saving it and checking the image size.

Interesting. If I select the old VFB and enable the upscaling option (regardless IR or production), I only get 1/4 of the rendering as a cropped version. Does the old VFB not support AI upscaling?

UPD: Whoops. Sorry, I posted in the wrong section. I am working with max and corona.
If this working as expected in C4D, please delete my message.
