Another way....

Sometimes i just drop objects (People, cars, trees, chairs)in my scene without caring for the Z value, I just place them along the X,Y. Once im happy with their location I drop them with this script

I use ObjectDropper, remember to always move your gizmo to the bottom of your model.

It also has some other scripts that can come in handy.
