General CG Discussion / Re: News from Maxon: C4D-R17!
« on: 2015-08-08, 10:17:54 »
Yeah I think the fact we have to wait another 12 months under a cloak of secrecy to find out is the frustrating bit. It really feels like they plow on with fingers in their ears. However the new takes tool will be handy I can't deny that. Corona is so refreshing where you can see the roadmap and converse directly with the developers. Not to mention the constant publishing of updates and new tools.

Sounds great. Any word on mat id render pass? Looking forward to A4.

Looks great, I like the mood you've created.

What shader did you use for the water? or did you use Hot4D? It looks quite effective. Good to see some C4D stuff on here. I have only dabbled as I'm waiting for full multipass support before I see if i can use it for work.

Yeah mat IDs are something I use with every render with vray. An absolute essential for post work and picky clients!, so hopefully get them in the next alpha.

[C4D] General Discussion / Re: Grass scattering

Thats and interesting test @Kod3d. I bought carbon scatter when it was on offer recently but only tried it for a short test and just found the workflow more of a hassle than surface spread as it seemed more disjointed from C4D and more its own thing. But perhaps thats its strength and does all that generation outside C4D, I will dust it off and give it another go now. Cheers

I think he has access to newer versions not released to the public yet. All looks good though. Love the simplicty and logic of the corona material and the quality it produces.

Yeah IR and DR for me. Also went for more shaders. Would love a mighty tiles type shader but I know its a big ask. We only have kendo shaders which is limited to regular sized 'bricks'.

Oh and is it possible to get a closer crop on the preview ball in the editor? There is quite a bit of wasted space around it that could be filled by the ball.

Cheers

Impressive amount of activity! You guys really are super efficient. Really pleased with the C4D dev announcement - that list is pretty comprehensive, can't think of too many more features apart from DR. Oh IR and interactive FB for tweaking hightlight compression on the fly, uh that will be so good!

[Max] I need help! / Re: Interior Render Time Problem (C4D)
« on: 2015-04-07, 18:37:37 »
I've been using corona sun for interiors, not HDRI and have found it quite a bit slower than I was expecting. It flies with the demo scene but that has almost a whole wall of glazing so it gets plenty of light in. I've not downloaded workflows scene to test though.

[Max] I need help! / Re: Interior Render Time Problem (C4D)

I can't help you im afraid but Im also a C4D user and have found interiors with small openings unexpectedly slow to render on a 32 thread machine @2.6ghz - even basic white models with a bit of glass and nothing in the windows. I dont know if there is something wrong with the initial alphas efficiency as it would seem others with the Max version are turning out much more complex scenes in far less time. I dont think it can all be down to portals.

Thanks that's a good link. Looks like they do make some difference if you're careful. Looking forward to trying them on C4D when they get implimented.

Oh right that's good to know. I do find the quality and speed of Corona fantastic but that seems to be heavily related to opening size in my tests. I do quite a few basement fit outs, often multi level that rely on light wells so its something to consider.

Im a C4D lurker and have tried the beta quite a bit but not on a full scene. In the tests I've noticed that you get a very heavy speed penalty the smaller the windows and the more indirect lighting you have for interiors. This makes sense as its relying on light bounces to resolve the image and a lot will be wasted bouncing around the outside of the building that can't be seen. Hence why portals are used as far as I can tell. Vray doesn't have quite the same slow down - there are other issues with artifacts but not quite the noticable slow down with smaller appertures. So Im interested to know how much of a difference portals make to corona and if you can get acceptable render times in these tricky scenes? Thanks.

Love everything about this - including the colours and composition.
