Needing some advice regarding my workstation.

I've had my current 3990x computer since they came out and it has performed great until recently.  It's a prebuild from PC Specialist, which isnt quite the build I wanted as I requested a Noctua fan cooler for the CPU, but was told that it wasnt compatible with the chip.  So ended up going with the Coolermaster MasterLiquid ML360 RGB TR4.  Every now and again it will just shut off without warning, losing work in the process.  I ignored it for awhile thinking it was just a glitch, but it has happening more frequently now.  I suspect it is overheating as temps were reaching 95degrees underload and around 75 degrees idle, i've since switched off PBO, which has reduced the temps a little, but still having occassions were the computer just turns off.

I'm looking to replace the cooler and having done some reasearch purchased the beQuiet silent loop 2.  However, having now received this I dont think its going to do the job as it doesnt cover the whole chip.  So looking to return it and replace it with something else.  I'm looking at one of the following options:

Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3
Icegaint ProSiphon Elite
Silverstone IceGem 360

The icegaint seems to be the best for cooling, but man that thing is ugly.  I was thinking of getting the Icegem as it covers the whole die and from what I've read on this forum from dfcorona seems to perform well.

Any thoughts, help or suggestions appreciated.

Hardware / Re: Threadripper Builds
« on: 2020-03-10, 15:16:37 »
I've ordered the following machine thru PC Specialist (Don't have the time to build my own): -

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X
BE QUIET! DARK BASE PRO 900 REV. 2 FULL TOWER CASE
ASUSĀ® ROG ZENITH II EXTREME
64GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3200MHz (4 x 16GB)
1TB SEAGATE FIRECUDA 520 GEN 4 PCIe NVMe
CORSAIR 1000W RMx MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
CoolerMaster MasterLiquid ML360 RGB TR4

Should be arriving in the next few days, however, I have had some issues with ordering this.  Firstly I was told that I couldn't use the Noctua UH14s cpu cooler due to the 3990x requiring 290W of power, but the Noctua only provides 280W.  Tried to get it changed but ended up having to go for the ML360.  May change this myself eventually.  I was also told that the memory I ordered had to be set at 3000MHz rather than 3200MHz, due to some incompatibility and to wait for a Bios update before setting to 3200.  Anyone know anything about this?

Hardware / Re: Dual Xeon E5-2670 or i7-5820k

Thanks Juraj,

They are both pre built systems, the i7 will be new and the dual xeon is second hand, that has been built by an enthusiast.

I was going to with the dual xeon, the plan being to use this for about a year, then get another computer and use the dual xeon as a render machine.

Does this Xeon support embree?  I can't seem to find any information about it.

Hi,

I'm after some advice.  I'm looking to purchase a new workstation, but can't decide between these two.

Dual xeon E5-2670
16gd ram 2400
gtx 960 graphics
250gb ssd

I7 5820k
16gb ram
gtx 960
250gb ssd

They are roughly in the same price bracket.  Using the benchmarks the dual xeon appears faster, but is three years old.

Dual xeon benchmark is 18580
i7-5820k is 12906

However, not sure how this transfers to real world use.

Thanks.

Fantastic.  Have downloaded from the download section of the website and was going to run demo for a few days before purchase.  However will not install to 3ds max 2014, files will load for 2015, but not 2014.  Have completely uninstalled Alpha 7.2 and tried installing 1.0, with no luck.  Tried copying files from 2015 to 2014 and changing the file name to 2014, again with no luck.

It is possible that the 3dsmax installation path in registry is messed up. Try running "Just unpack" option in the installer with some temporary folder selected, and then manually copying over the 2014 files

Great.  That worked.  Thank you.

[Max] General Discussion / Re: REBUS RenderFarm
« on: 2014-03-31, 01:25:58 »
This is great news.  Have been using Rebus for a short while now and have been very impressed with there service.  I have been waiting for a render farm service to adopt corona so I can switch over from vray.  Glad it's Rebus.

[Max] General Discussion / Color Bounce
« on: 2013-12-03, 12:34:06 »
First post here and got tosay I;'m very impressed with Corona.  I'm, like many here a long time vray user, and I have been trying out corona on a project I am currently working on.

The project is a little unusual as it is a part section thru the building.  One problem i am having, which I can't seem to resolve is that of colour bouncing.  I have put a blue carpet on the walls, and as you can see on the attached image the colour is bouncing heavily on the ceilings.  With VRay, I would stick a material override on the carpet and put a white material in the gi slot.  Is there a workaround for this issue in Corona.  I don't really want to go back to vray to solve this problem, so any help would be appreciated.
