..  you can not navigate directly in VFB.

That's what I was trying to say.

Ignore my previous reply. I thought he meant when you had used the viewport as the extended viewport with the render in it,

It's not a viewport, it's a VFB in this mode, so it is not interactive by nature.

OMG. I am in love with the interactive rendering. I've never seen it so well implemented, or so fluid. This is a huge step forward.

Vray and Corona automatically set process priority when rendering to low, while MR does not. If you want to use your PC while rendering with MR, set 3dsmax.exe process priority to low in task manager.

I find that as well as doing this, changing the processor affinity to leave a couple of free cores really helps too.

[Archive] Alpha Builds / Re: Alpha v7.1 hotfix released

I stand corrected! However, you are still getting more bang for your buck with an overclocked i5. I have an i5 and an i7, and in use, they feel pretty much the same. The i7 feels marginally quicker.

Yeah, I understand that i7's are faster but they also cost a lot more, so it's fine. You get what you pay for :>

You can clock an i5 to 4.5gHz quite happily, which makes it faster than a stock i7, although you lose hyperthreading. It is considerably cheaper, for those on a budget.

This will be a great tool when finished!

One thing I'd like is to incorporate something like this in it:

[Max] Resolved Feature Requests / Re: Displacement smoothing
« on: 2014-09-16, 22:37:11 »
From the help file:

Turn off to have the mental ray renderer correctly render height maps. Height maps can be generated by normal mapping; see Creating and Using Normal Bump Maps .
When using only height maps in the scene, make sure this option is off. If some objects in the scene use height maps while others use standard displacement, apply smoothing on a per-object basis (see mental ray Panel (Object Properties Dialog) ).

When on, mental ray simply smoothes the geometry using the interpolated normals, making the geometry look better. This result, however, cannot be used for height map displacement because smoothing affects geometry in a way that is incompatible with height mapping.

Well, I guess I'm going blind. I really struggled to make out much overall difference. I think I need glasses!

I would like a ton of things. But we are working on a limited budget: monetary, time, and energy. So we have to make compromises, like the first release being archviz-oriented.

To be honest, lately I am getting frustrated from getting feature requests or suggestions that are outside any realistic time plan, always supported by that one sentence/paragraph "and this is the most important thing because...". There are like 40 of those floating around. Please realize that we are also only people and while there are many important things, we cannot handle them all at once.

There will always be too many suggestions from users, you guys seem to know what you are doing, so keep on as you are. There's always time later to expand on what you have built. Everyone I've showed Corona too has been stunned; you are doing something right!

By a slim margin, number two feels cleaner to my eyes, after tabbing between them in Photoshop for several minutes.

You must forgive me.... I don't have a photographic memory. But, your avatar does ring a bell... it's abit creepy :)
It's funny (and abit shallow) but I do respond more favourably to people with nice avatars. Members seem obsessed by having avatars relating to death & destruction... for example DeathClown. When I looked at his real photo ID on his site he looked like a nice guy. It's like all CG designers are members of Hells Angels.

Just to satisfy my curiosity... what is the Forum again.... what is your name on the site (as a point of reference) and will you help me out.... or throw me to the CG wolves?

Ha ha, my avatar is a bit creepy I guess. It's a dwarf office worker with Futurama brain slug on his head. In real life, I just look like a normal guy, honest!

The forum was Maxforums.org. It can be quiet, noisy and at times people really do say what they think, but there are some really clever people there, some of them working for well-known studios. It's an alternative to the stiffness of some other forums. It's been running for nearly 15 years now, if I remember correctly. My username there is my real name, Nik Clark. We have a team of moderators who (when they are around) generally greet new users and warn them to expect honest opinions and that running-jokes may be used. Some love the place, others don't, but you would always be welcome there.

Anyway, I have a child to feed, I must go.
