I have Matt Damon working on it now... using mathematics.

@aaouviz. – Makes sense as this is the C4D forum section. Not to say Corona users from either app can't help as long as it's not an app-specific issue.

[C4D] I need help! / Re: Convert VRay Scenes to Corona

From what I remember, you have to own VRAY and Corona for that conversion button to work. I might be remembering it wrong.

I chuckled when I saw this thread. In the past, I have complained that I thought Corona was upgrading full versions too fast. Ha. I think Tom makes a great point about a maturing application becoming a product with refinements, speed boosts and the occasional major feature. I mean, how many groundbreaking features does Microsoft add to Word these days?

In the old days, major versions of 3D apps always boasted about render speed increases. I don't see that much with Corona right now. Mainly relying on the number of cores on the system being used. If the features stayed the same, but render speed was increased by 50% or more, that is a game-changer for most. Corona is already great and artists are making amazing images now, but if they can do the same thing a lot faster? Boom.

This discussion makes me think about previous threads where I lamented the meaning of these benchmark numbers. Basically, it's difficult to relate them to the real-world. I couldn't find that thread, but in the past over at core4d.com, I would ask people to open the Grapes scene from the Asset Browser and just hit Render to Picture Viewer. At least it's an actual scene one might need to render and we all have access to that scene. It is not Corona, but will test the CPU and give you a render time.

For example, I just found a couple of older screen grabs of the Grapes test. 2013 Trashcan 6-core: 10 min, 3 sec. 2017 iMac Pro 18-core:  3 min, 19 sec. For my brain, I can figure out that's about a 223% increase in render speed. When I upgrade, that's what I want to see, not a meager 20%. I can use this info to guess how long a job will take to render on the new machine. That's just me.

I don't remember how the Corona benchmark works. Does it just render for a specific time and then just see how many rays it used?

Have you checked if your normals are point outward?

I will jump on the photographer angle for 3D. Your room looks nice overall, but the lighting is fairly flat. What is the focus of the shot? Could be more than one area. Some product photographers use this trick with translates to 3D nicely. Turn ALL lighting OFF. Then turn only one light on at a time. Examine what that one light is doing. Is is just providing edge lighting or more overall light of the subject? Turn it off and move to the next one. Repeat the process. Then turn them all back on and you will be able to quickly know "Oh, that light need to be brighter or darker".

Using the Light Mix tools can help too. All this assumes that your lights are in the best places and angles. Using Light Mix, you can adjust any light individually without re-rendering. Intensity and color. Turn some on or off. Just assign each light, even the sun and sky, to their own Light Mix. It's pretty neat even just to play.

My eye went to the left "leg" of the coffee table. There seems to be no contact shadow in this area. Ambient Occlusion.

Just saw this render. I think it's very well done. My first glance was "Is that an actual photo?" I'm sure you can find some little thing, but 99.5% of the world will see a photo. Great job.

I have zero time with Max, but I will say going from C4D r20 to r25 was a very noticeable snappiness in working with larger scenes. I don't don't how it compares to other apps that are know to handle large scenes well, but I think comparing r19 to current stuff doesn't work too well. I have yet to try r2023 so it may have improved even more. The fact that you're on Windows is even better, as us Mac users tend to suffer slower response with large scenes.

@James – There is definitely some creative choice to use depth-of-field in these shots.

These look great. Curious if you modeled everything or did the client provide 2D or 3D files?

My only tip is from a graphic design perspective. On the detail shot showing the cabinet handles, I would alter the angle ever so slightly. Just enough so the lines of the hands don't lineup with the lines of the doors. It's a small change, but it can add to the depth of the shot. In graphic design, those are called tangents. If two items are very close to each other, either space them apart more OR overlap them with purpose.

My two cents.

Here's a list of quality materials that either I have purchased, or have me eye on. There are also lots of PBR (Physically Based Rendering) sets out there. Once you get comfortable, you can easily build a nice looking material without getting too complicated.

Unless I really need to see materials and colors in the viewport on a larger scene, I just turn them off until I need to see them. Makes a big difference for me.

Curious if the C4D Console (Extensions menu) window would provide some useful information? If it doesn't retain any info since you have to force quit, then have it on screen when you render so at least you can see what's going on.

Any chance you Cached the Cloth sim? Remember, cloth is a simulation. You can't even scrub or begin in the middle of an animation until you cache it. Might help.
