wow thanks for the tip. I had heard of people using fusion on these forums but assumed it was an expensive bit of kit for those who use it as a daily tool. Didn't realise there was a free version on offer. The product spec looks like it will do a lot more than I will ever need it for im sure. Downloading now. Thanks again.

Yes displacement would be my guess if you're using it. Try increasing the pixel thresh in the settings and also optimise the displacement map so it's not as detailed. Either that or you might be pushing your ram like koldi said.

It's been a long time since I've done any motion work but I'm increasingly getting asked if I can do flythroughs for schemes. I am planning to just use simple photoshop as my editor as I don't have an ae license and to be honest might be overkill for short clips. Unless anyone can recommend an inexpensive editor that has some good colour grading and text options?

My main question is which format to save my image sequence out in? I appreciate I will be foregoing any multi pass channels going through photoshop but I also want to keep it streamlined and workable. My experience with AE from a few years ago was that I ended up with a boatload of timelines and it was difficult to keep track of everything.

Any general pointers would be really helpful. If there is a way to efficiently use multi passes in an affordable and easy to use software I'm all ears! Many thanks

Sure, im in the same boat when using forrester I can get some really nice results but a few species and variants chews into my 64GB.

I suspect corona still has to load in the 1million poly objects but im guessing it cuts out the need to load it into c4d as well. Also there is the benefit of keeping the main scene file down. I am using c4d xrefs for this reason but they are very unreliable and buggy, so looking forward to getting the corona proxys.

4.1 is a pretty solid release aside from the IR part. As for proxys am I right in thinking that render instances work as proxys at the moment but that we can go one step better by having pre-saved proxys that only have to be read into the corona engine rather having to double up with c4d having to have the original in the file and then export again to corona?

Looking forward to getting DR and hopefully 2D displacement when it comes in to the core. Really enjoying 4.1 and using it for most new projects, RAM consumption is quite hight though with displacement and high res planting so hopefully some optimisation at some stage too would be great.

Great news. Looking forward to the 2D displacement implementation when it comes. It works really well in vray and is fast to calculate, but does still eat ram. The current corona displacement can take ages to pre calc. Was waiting for 15mins on my last project before the initial pass started and even then that was only at 1.5px setting and there was still some wobbliness going on.

Thanks for the detailed answer! Sounds like you have done it for similar reasons as what I would if it wasn't quite so expensive and notoriously buggy. If I was to start all over again I would go for max as it really is the global tool for arch viz. I currently model in sketchup and then use c4d for vray but more recently I've been switching new projects to corona which is a breath of fresh air! I do wish there was a fully featured universal material editor across all apps so we could exchange and learn materials with all users. Most of the max materials use the slate editor which we don't have in c4d (which is crazy in 2016) but on the other hand I like the c4d tick box activation for channels, proceedurals and layer shader etc. Seems cleaner in a way. And yes the c4d modelling set is pretty poor, hence sketchup but I wish I didn't need to export and import so much. Anyway thanks again.

Really nice render there. I'm curious as to how you have found working with max coming from c4d and what made you switch? I often wonder how it compares when you get down and do a full project in it. For sure there are a tonne of arch viz centred plugins and models available which is tempting on its own. However the pricing structure is not!

Great renders. Where did you get the carrera marble texture from? Im trying to track one down. Cheers

Some terrific modelling - I can't believe they had to be modeled for such a small feature in the image! There is no way I could model boots like that, never mind having to do them in addition to the rest of the image. She has a rare talent in a field dominated by men.

I hope Sigar does those shaders for the C4D version some day. Or even better (he?) does them for Corona if gets its own material editor that works cross platform like maxwell did way back when (not looked at it for years).

Damn these are excellent in every aspect. That leather mat is immense. Congrats to you both.

The displacement is the new system that creates better results without the need to heavily subdivide your mesh first. The downside is it takes longer to precalc.

[Max] I need help! / Re: XEON 2699 V3 bad scalability

Does corona scale better than the likes of cinebench? I usually use that as a go to for comparing potential cpu upgrades. So if we can add up the cores/ghz combo and get 99% accuracy for corona speed that is a useful tip. I'm assuming we only lose a little bit of speed through the ram controller for CPUs with 10cores and below? Is it quantifiable?

Are you using a high gamut monitor? I have had years of frustration with vray and gamma and I have also noticed that if I use the interactive renderer in Corona on a high gammut monitor the colours are different to the editor. I now have an sRGB monitor as my main monitor as its just not worth the hassle.

Thats interesting to know about the extinction parameter and its effect that can be simulated by high IOR as things like steel were only coming in at IOR 2.5. Good to know that just using the basic system we can get visually close enough withought going too complex. Thanks again, Rob.
