Title: How to create a wall projection...
Post by: johnnyswedish on 2019-01-30, 23:48:23
Hi Corona Forum!

I am currently working on a visualisation of a exhibition project. There will be two ceiling mounted projectors. How would I go about creating the wall projections onto the wall? Should I create a spotlight with a gel of the image in front? Any help would be appreciated 🙏👍😎 John.

Is it a flat wall?

Corona light has a texmap slot.
You can put in anything you want there. Image sequence or just a a static image.
Make it square, set the light directionality to 1 and you have your projector / projected image

edit:
Actually I take that back, see screenshot.
With directionality 1 it still comes out blurred, seems I misunderstand how that value works.
Someone care to explain?

Hi mferster & SairesArt!

The Wall is flat by the way. I might have a person obstructing a bit. The screen shot supplied is exactly what I'm after but not blurry. Thank you for such a swift reply! John 😎👍

CoronaLight won't give you desired effect. If wall is flat and there's no obstacles between the light source and the wall and you don't need volumetric effect, then you can simply fake it with composite map in wall material's self-illum slot. Otherwise use max's standard spotlight, which has projector map option.

He said he has people in front of it, that way it won't hit ppl infront.

Nice! Indeed, now this way it works flawlessly, see attachment.
But still, why doesn't Corona's direcitonality 1 give a perfect projection?

Maybe it's because Corona light rays actually aren't parallel at directionality 1?

Guess so. I thought parallel rays was the definition of 100% directionality^^

That's what i thought too, that is until i started moving light with directionality 1 closer/farther to the wall...

Hi All & Thank you for all your good advice. I forgot to mention I use C4D (Sorry!). I have tried using Corona light material with direction 1. Getting some weird effects 😳. Should I re-post in C4D forum? Have a great weekend 😎👍

Please do. I could move this topic to C4D board, but it's already quite valuable info for 3ds max users is posted here. I think it would be better if this topic will stay where it is.

Edit: it looks that someone has already started similar topic in C4D board. You may want to take a look at it first: https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=23464.0

Thank you very much for maintaining the topic, it really is a life saver!
The only adjustment I made was to apply the corona converter to the max's standard spotlight. before doing this the light did not appear. Thanks!

It still seems impossible to have a projector from corona renderer without using Standard Max lights (Which not always work).
Any chance we see the option to du a real projector (like in a cinema). Or making directionality 1,0 really parallel.

Thanks.

It's not the best solution, but sometimes you can use a Corona Decal object with a Light Mtl to get a projector effect.

Hi,

Max standard lights do work with Corona, if by not "working" you mean the updates in IR, this is unfortunately expected. You need to restart the IR to see the changes.
The best way for a projector effect with Corona currently is - Standard/photometric lights, CoronaShadows selected, Projector map used, Volume light effect added for the light.
The projector feature is already requested.

Hi Aram!
Is this working with C4d as well? I mean what is current the best way for a projector effect with Corona? By Standard/photometric lights you mean Corona Light with directionality 100%?!

Thank you in advance

Hi, I'm from the C4D team :) I use standard C4D lights for this as it produces pin-sharp results, fast to render and also works with the Corona Volume material. A Corona light set to 100% directionality is literally the opposite ;(

Hello Bengamin, thank you very much for your reply.
Some years ago, we discuss the same topic in an old forum thread in 2019.
Back then, the best way was using C4d lights with a C4d material (and the texture in the transparency slot), this is still how I do it but have the setback of we dont see it in IR and is really difficult to match the mapping / dimension in the material tag of the image with the camera projection cone...
For the example, you shared is still the same way? Or there are some tricks to resolve the previous "issues" mentioned.
Thank you very much for your support
best
Luis
