When I apply any sort of Corona material (even the default physical material) to an object, it causes this strange ghosting effect. The ghosting effect doesn't happen when I remove all materials or apply the default 3dsMax physical material. Does this sounds familiar to an experience anyone has had before? The corona materials that I'm trying don't have any refraction amount.

This is happening in all instances of 3dsMax for me. Even in a new file with only a box with the Corona physical material applied, the effect still occurs.

How do you know if it's Corona's fault? I have this issue in some scenes since i moved to 3ds max 2023, but for me it happened even in the scene where Corona was not selected as render engine and there were no Corona materials in the scene.

I guess I don't truly know it's Corona's fault, but the issue is only showing up when I apply a Corona Physical or Legacy Material, so you could say Corona became suspicious after a bit of troubleshooting. It's happened across 3 separate 3dsMax files now.

I should add that I'm in 3dsmax 2022 with Corona 9.

This also started happening with me when I installed a v9 daily a few weeks back.

It doesn't bother me too much, I can't say it's Coronas fault, but I also can't say it is not.

My simple fix is to choose the 'Standard' (or whatever preference you have, I guess) display setting in the viewport. This seems to do a quick 'reset' and fix the issue immediately.

I'm on Max 2023.1

I can't say for sure, but I don't believe I was experiencing this until installing C9 as well.

I'm not saying it's not Corona, it's just for me it coincided with my move to Max 2023 and since i find that many things deteriorated in Max since 2016, i naturally started to blame Autodesk for this inverted normals view in viewports. And switching to different view or shading mode doesn't help here - if the scene catches this bug, it's usually permanent and persists even between 3ds Max sessions. Actually i would be happy to know that it's Corona's bug, since then it would be guaranteed that it will be fixed sooner rather than later :]

Hi everyone, this is a known bug that was introduced in v9 daily builds but it was fixed, it should no longer be happening, can you please share a simple scene for us to test further?

Here's the screenshots of two models with the issue. One of them has Corona physical materials, the other one has glTF material (it was displaying fine with Max physical material, but become inverted upon conversion to glTF with Max's scene converter). Notice how the model with Corona materials (the truck) is actually displaying fine in one of the viewports, while it's inverted in others even though all the viewports share identical settings as far as i can tell.

I can share both models, but i don't want to bother with opening the support ticket. Would it be ok if i do this through skype, George?

edit: i'm using 3ds Max 2023.2.2 and Corona 9 final.

Just an update and a great thanks to Romullus, his scene helped identify the issue right away. It seems like there is a bug with opacity input + transparency visualization for 3dsmax viewport in Standard and DX quality.

Switching to High-quality viewport should address the issue, as well as disabling transparency from viewport quality (top left corner) Standard > Materials > (untick) transparency, at least until we fix the issue. Please let me know if that worked for you or if there is an additional variable.

After further investigation it seems that this is a 3dsMax issue and not exclusive to any renderer. We will be notifying Autodesk regarding this and hopefully it can be addressed.
